Perhaps part of the reason is that we have a society of people who are willing to be conned. We live in a time and place where we get quick and easy gratification. We have microwaves, cars, etc. So we want to believe there is a quick and easy way to do everything. So we believe the silly ads that say "Lose 50 pounds in 2 days!" Or "Get rich quick!" We think these things ought to be possible. And so "we" fall for them. (I don't. but a lot do).

In the case of religion, it's not much different. People want to believe that Benny Hinn can lay his hand on you, and you are suddenly healed. They prefer this to believing that perhaps there is some greater challenge to the illness that God would want us to overcome. Because the latter is hard work. We are basically lazy. We would rather it all be given to us.

So it is wishful thinking.

Our society has lost focus of what's really important in life. Thus, greed, power, and materialism is the main focus for many people. A small minority are taken advantage of, simply because they are trusting and want to help others. However, they are the exception. The majority of people are conned, because they are expecting something in return, or looking for some type of personal benefit above others. The con man or woman, plays upon their greed and desires.

Because it's human nature to try to get something for nothing and profit by the ignorance of others. Con men offer a person something that appears to be of great value for very little effort or investment. Then they are long gone before they realize they were taken in by their own greed and are left holdng an empty bag.

My personal opinion is that the most successful con-men are quite clever (unfortunate!), and prey on those who know less about a subject than they do - and choose the most vulnerable people and those with a vice (such as elderly and those who want to get-rich-quick - not just for greed's sake, but maybe for their families, or to attain the dreams they have for their families).

A couple of my friends have been taken for a ride in the last few years, and in one case in particular, he just wanted to make life easier for his family - but ended up making his own more difficult.

It breaks my heart to see these con-men exploit new pathways of taking advantage of others (internet particularly) - but karma will surely catch up to them.

we are a gimme gimme society, focused on money and things. Someone promising wealth is attractive, and people don't see the con. This is especially bad for our senior citizens who are in general more trusting than others. 0:)
