If you just got him it could be stress. He's probably lonely so if he's hand tamed take him/her out and let him/her sit on your shoulder. Cockatiels are very smart so make sure they have alot of interesting toys to play with when you're not around, I would suggest a jungle gym to play on when you can't really have them sit on you.

The word stress is is probably right for your situation, for me I think impatient is better, I've had mine for years. My tiel does this in the morning, about an hour after I am up and his blanket it still over his cage he starts pacing, I know he wants out, but have to get things done before I let him out. Oh the pacing comes along with hitting his beak on the bars and later a few whistles to entice me to let him out, he has developed a really sad sounding screech that usually makes me let him out. Your cockatiel is not retarded, wait a while and you will see just how intelligent he is. Enjoy

The bird wants to get out! Have the wings clipped and open the cage door when you are there. It will go back periodically to eat..Cockatiels are trainable and really friendly if you take the time to work with them. If you just want a bird that sits in the cage get a parakeet..I had 32 PAIRS of cockatiels and hand fed them and taught them to talk and ride on my dogs backs..But do keep the wings clipped...Read up on raising them then you don't have to ask and get answers from people that really have NO CLUE..

Your cockatiel may be suffering from being bored, or not getting enough attention. Try putting some fun toys, and maybe a mirror, to make him a little happier. Mirrors help because when they see themselves, they feel like they have more company. Try paying more attention to him too. Maybe holding him when you watch T.V., or letting him sit on your shoulder during dinnertime so he can be a little more social.

I think he needs a vet. Could be it's just because he is getting older, but if he is wobbly there could be a problem. Keep him warm and take him to the vet. (they can live 18 to 25 years under prime conditions)

Do you have any toys in the cage?If you dont put some in. Or probably it wants to get a mate, get him a female. I dont think anything is wrong with it, in fact i think its in a GREAT condition. The more active he is the more fit and healthy he gets.

Yeah, I know cockatiels and I dare say yours is a dud. You paid a lot for it, no doubt. but you're not going to get your money back. And there's nothing redeeming about nurturing a mentally challenged bird.
The good news is you have a bona fide delicacy. Yum! Enjoy!
