Going to get some new plates, as old ones are in poor condition, and MOT coming up. What's legal these days? Have found a dozen sites on the net that let you have numerous logos on the side, different texts/fonts, borders etc, but what are you actually allowed?

Your registration plates should be made up by a manufacturer who is registered on the DVLA's Register of Number Plate Suppliers (RNPS). You will be asked for your documents (V5 logbook, and personal ID), as proof that you are entitled to use the registration.
The DVLA Regulations specify the typeface, the size, colouring and the British Standard that number plates must conform to (and alternatives for motorcycles, tricycles and traditional plates). Reputable number plate manufacturers will be aware of these regulations.
VEHICLE REGISTRATION MARKS must be displayed in accordance with The Road Vehicles (Display of Registration Marks) Regulations 2001 (obtainable from HMSO). See http://www.opsi.gov.uk/
Some basic rules
* You must display a number plate on the front and rear of your vehicle
* Letters should be black on a white plate at the front
* Letters should be black on a yellow plate at the rear
* The background surface should be reflex-reflecting, but not the letters
* Number plates should meet the British Standard
* Rules on character dimensions differ slightly depending on whether your plates were fitted before or after 1st September 2001. Details are below.
* Rules on character dimensions differ for traditional 'black and white' plates, which may be fitted on vehicles manufactured before 1st January 1973.

The letters and numbers have to be a certain size and font on white and yellow back grounds, and the spacing is critical, you can have some small words etc at the bottom and a border line in black blue etc. and you can have the EU thing or a flag or the Welsh or Scottish signs, there are two or three types of letters that you can have as well, but not fancy Gothic character and so on, Take a look on eBay and you will find loads and the better firms will tell you that the plate is legal or just for show purposes.

Legally you have to have the text in standard font and size and the only logo on the side is nationality in the standard international form. Most people ignore the law and have different fonts etc and logos on but, and this is a big but, although it may seem that they get away with it it only takes a policeman who's having a bad day to see them and you've got a pink slip (NOT GOOD). If you ever get stopped on one of those roadside police checks they are likely to pull you up on it (again pink slip as a minimum).

The number plates have to conform to government regulations a rough guide is front white reflective with black lettering and rear yellow reflective black lettering. the EEC star logo with the lettering of the country of origin eg -GB- in the centre. Al-tho allot of people have different styles of lettering and borders, logo`s, moto`s, etc, etc, if you are involved in a serious accident you would find out soon enough that a non standard plate would mean another charge added to your prosecution, also in extreme circumstances your insurance might be able to wriggle out of covering you using the argument " use of non legal items. Something to think about??????)

Every state has different regulations. Since you can only get your plate from your local MVD you don't have to worry about getting something illegal. Most, if not all, states have an online MVD service that shows your choices and the prices.

You had better check with your automobile registration place. Each province is different in Canada so I assume each state may be different.
Since you did not say where you live it is better not to accept an answer from here!!

you are aloud a logo on the side but no change to the numbers/letters

check with your local motor vehicle office and they have all the plates available on display that you can choose froom as they vary from state to state
