I think you are referring to a portion of Daniel 5 in the Bible. This is the source of the expression "seeing the handwriting on the wall". The hand of God wrote "Mene Mene Tekel Upharsin" on the wall at a banquet being held by King Belshazzar at which he is using the sacred gold vessels taken from the temple in Jerusalem from which to drink wine. "Tekel" is interpreted by Daniel to mean "Thou art weighed in the balances, and art found wanting". This was God's judgment upon Belshazzar whose kingdom was taken from him by the Medes and the Persians.
