Either hereditary or hormonal imbalance. My guess the later. Teens bodys are growing and changing and a 16 year old girl especially (PMS) is common.
If it is the first and she is depressed all the time then she need medication.
I still think it is her hormones. Go see a Herbalist or to a Health Food Store. Have her tell them she needs something for depression. They can give her something natural like herbs and they work. St. Johns Wort is the best for depression. Just make sure she follow the directions. They even have other combos. Natural suff is amazing and so much better than meds (no real side affects if careful)
At 16 girls hormones go wild especially before a period even up to a week. Talk to her convince her to talk to someone and get help. Being young and depressed is not good.

What a nice boyfriend you are to get her help.

Do you pray? If not try to pray for her, she might just need it. Another thing to do is find something adventurous for her and get her adrenaline going. Or if she is depressed when she is around you and not her friends, then that might be her way of saying that she does not like the relationship and where it is or she is trying to say that she does not like you anymore. I am not trying to be mean but sometimes, you teenagers have your own way of trying to say something. Ask her how does she feel about the relationship? Where does she want to take the relationship and what steps does she want to take them. Don't ask her about you? Make her come out and say it. If she doesn't say anything, then watch her body language and that will also tell you.
Good luck and GOD BLESS YOU

I get like that a lot too, and I tend to worry people also. Most of the time it goes away eventually, but if it gets worse or she is depressed all the time, you need to get more help than just people on the internet. She could be going through a rough patch, but if its more than that, she might need more help. Talk to her, try to find out whats going on and if it doesnt go away soon, I would try to get her to see a doctor or something.

Tell her it's PMS
track her "sad dayz"
track her food cravings
then track her "cycle" i m sure this iz the problem when the depression is unwarranted.
This is great that u care so much for her...just don't b a wimp! Or she'll leave u for a "tougher" type.
Exercise lifts these moods. Just go for romantic walks as often as possible.
