I don't believe in the concept of a guard dog. If someone really wants to get in your house, your big, scary dog can be stopped with a single gunshot or whack to the head with a bat.
I would spend the security money elsewhere and keep the dog as a friendly, family pet.

A large dog such as a Pit Bull or Rottweiler would defend quite well if properly trained BUT these dogs should only be owned by those who have the experience to handle them. If you just want a lot of loud barking on the other side of the door but an easy going dog the rest of the time, get a Labrador, Golden Retriever or better yet, get a big mutt from the pound- he'll be so grateful.

Any bigger dog that sounds mean would be good. most of the time a break in will occur at night or when your not home. so the chance of them being able to see the dog is slim to none. as far as crazymanca7 stupid coment about " not being mean as pittbull" grow up would you, thats like sayin all mexicans steal, or all blacks are lazy, and white people embezzle. dont judge people or any other animal. i personally have a pit bull that i can honestly say would probably do nothing more than want to sniff and lick someone breaking in.
ps. buy a gun, take a personal protection class, and be responsible. just incase he gets past the dog. allso there are lots of things you can do to make your house less vulnrable to attack. like keep bushes trimmed under the window line. motion sensing lights are getting alot cheaper try to have the path to your door well lit and easily visable, to protect against an ambush.
hope that helps

It depends on whether you want the dog to protect you or just alert you so you can protect yourself. Go to a shelter and find a Mutt that you feel attracted to and is friendly toward you. Size does not matter if you only need the dog to alert you, but if you want one to protect you, a minimum of 80 pounds should be about right. You don't need an expensive dog, just one that loves you. That's the kind that will die for you

If you don't want the dog to harm the burgular, but awaken you, then you should probably get a small, yappy dog. If you want an actual protective dog, you should get a larger dog, like a rott weiler or German shepard. You may have to get the dogs training, though.

I've had many breeds St.Bernard,Rottweiller,Doberman a couple of good sized mutts and presently German Shepherds. All have been excellant guard dogs so picking a certain breed over the other is next to impossible for me.
None of my dogs have ever had special training to guard or protect other than what we've taught them ourselves and all have done an excellant job.

A Miniature Pincsher is very good for a house dog. They let you know when someone is around. They have a loud bark that would wake you up and they are very loving and protect their owner.

umm there are many breeds to choose, it depends on your personality, for instance, if you are athletic you want a high energy dog like a yellow lab or german shepard, as temperment is concerned spaniels are small but have a bad rep for being extremely tempermental. you could also always go with the sweet dogs with a bad name such as pit bulls or rottweilers (they are sweet dogs, just many people who take part in dog fights have used there vicious looks for there own advantage) back to the small dogs, they look adorable but pack a big punch believe me, i know....
