Florence, Rome, Venice, and the Amalfi Coast. I spent a semester in Florence when I was in college and LOVED it! You should look into rail passes for the trains and an international student ID card. Both can save you a lot of money if you do your homework.
These websites are really helpful:
www.isecard.com - info about an international student ID and www.backpackeurope.com - has a TON of info about traveling to Europe
And I found Italians to be very friendly!

You're not telling where you've planned to go. Your wallet will either cry or laugh depending if you want visit or not a tourist town since there are ugly differences. However if you pay attention is also possible to visit Venice,Rome or Florence without spending a fortune.Unfortunately the conversion rate US$ / € is not currently helping you and you really need to chose the right things and the right places to avoid going "bankrupt".
Italians will welcome you both as an American and as an woman.
Don't be scared; mostly of us Italian we clearly remember that our freedom from Nazis has been achieved thank to your Country. We love America and Americans but silly persons are wherever and therefore you could also meet with a few persons that hate Americans (exactly as it could happen in Canada,France,England,etc.).
Come quietly here to Italy, enjoy our good food and wine, visit our surprising towns, meet with us and I'm sure that when you'll be back you'll love Italy even more than now.
See you soon here.

Italy in general is an expensive place. If you are on a budget, I would suggest youth hostels. They are very cheap. But, anywhere in Italy is slightly expensive.....however, I think allot of things are cheaper here than in America. In Rome there are many street merchants, and you can always bargain...so never pay full price for anything unless it is bought in a proper shop.
Oh, and about being American...do not worry! Most Italians love Americans (we are open to everyone though). Simply because you are from the U.S. will not make us hate you.
Best Wishes!

Have you thought about an exchange through your college? Depending on your program of study, it is usually the same tuition, you would just have to pay airfare, and living expenses the same as you would if you were attending college at home. Go for a semester! The only way to really see a country is to live there! Atleast thats how I see it.
If I hadn't have flunked out, i would have done it! but yeah.. dont flunk out. :)
