The Cloisters are beautiful, and set within a large area of garden/parkland. Plan on walking about fifteen minutes from the main gate to the castle, or you can take the M4 bus directly to the entrance. I suggest the walk, though; it's gorgeous any time of year.
Right now, it's partially under restoration, so you won't be able to see all of it, but what's open is quite enough. Admission is $10, or free if you see the Met the same day. Tours are free, and they start at, i think, 3:00 most days; if you don't know much about medival art, you should aim for one.

Here is a link for you with directions and info:

I was there many years ago (1980's) with my high school class. It is a fine place to visit in NYC--very different from the hustle & bustle of NY.
Ironically, the one and only time I went to the Cloisters was also the one and only time I visited the WTC. I can go back to the Cloisters. (Just reflecting...). Wishing you safe travel if you go.

Can't give you directions (I live in CA!), but I've been there a few times when visiting relatives. It's a gorgeous building w/lots of beautiful artwork.
Can't you just google the directions? Or go to MapQuest.
