You can try ground cinnamon, ginger, mace, allspice or cloves, starting with half the amount specified for the nutmeg and adding more to taste if you think it needs it. Or for a less spicy flavor you can leave it out totally.

Well, I agree that nutmeg is one on its own as far as spices go, but you could just leave it out all together this time...or try a little cinnamon (or use as substitute if recipe calls for this too)...nutmeg is aromatic but quite bitter so you could use a drop of angostura bitters in the mix...some of my best (and worst) outcomes have come from trying out alternatives! Why not try a hint of chilli!!! Good luck

It's a pity you don't live near me (PA). We can get it and other spices quite reasonably at the local bulk food stores. To me it has a hint of citrus peel to it, but that's just for starters. There is nothing quite like it. It shows up in everything from Indian Curries to Scandinavian baked goods to chai. People substitute various combinations of cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, coriander, and ginger, but you won't get something that tastes like cardamom. Not that it won't be good, it just won't be cardamom. Scout around for ethnic markets; it will often be cheaper there. Middle Eastern or Indian are what I'd try first. Treat yourself to some and make one or two of those recipes you're wondering about. It won't cost any more than eating out! It's one of my "secret ingredients."
