I just got a tattoo last night and my tattoo guy said to use fragrance free soap to wash it and then put fragrance free A&D ointment on it. I can't find fragrance free A&D ointment ANYWHERE. I tried grocery stores and Walmart but still no luck. Are there any other ointments I could use to put on it? What about vaseline? I heard mixed answers about putting vaseline on healing tattoos.

Just use vaseline, its waterproof as well as healing in a gentle way. Once the tat is sealed its hard to get infected(with vaseline) otherwise just put a mild salve on,like Savlon or Dettol(antiseptic washes). good luck.

There are many products out there today that claim to be the next best thing to heal tattoos. I work in a tattoo shop & have many tattoos myself & this is how I heal. Remove your bandage after 2hrs Wash your tattoo (with clean hands) with a fragrance free dye free soap. I like Dial antibacterial in the gold wrapper. Dry thoroughly & apply a thin layer of A&D ointment. Do NOT use bacatracin, Neosporin or vaseline. *If the tattoo looks shiny you are using too much ointment Continue washing & applying A&D 2-3 times a day for the first 3-5 days. On day 5 switch to a fragrance free hand lotion like Curel Everyones healing time differs but you should be fully healed within 2 weeks. As it heals it will flake & scab Do Not pick or scratch your tattoo. Do not apply sunscreen until fully healed. Do Not Swim or Tub Soak, Avoid prolonged shower spray.

My dad is a former tattoo artist and when he did mine he said even though it sounds a bit odd, use A & D diaper rash ointment. Using this its not as greasy as vasoline and it keeps the ink from fading!! Which is a big, BIG deal. It also keeps the tattoo from pealing just like a diaper rash it, helps skin irritation. I found out from experience that putting vasoline on tats can make them fade out and look old. You can get A&D from walgreens, CVS and in walmart its by the baby stuff! so Good Luck other than that just make sure its moist thats the key even lotion hell i have like 3 tubes of A&D i'll sell u one $2 lol.

I don't know if you looked in the baby section, but that's where the A&D is. You can use vaseline, but with my last tattoo I used neosporin ointment. Good luck!

Whilst many people use Vaseline to protect a tattoo, there is a danger that it could trap nasty bacteria against your brand new tattoo...! Leading to infection...! Not pleasant!!

I use one of the branded tattoo aftercare products, Tattoo Goo, but there are loads of different products available.
Also, don't over-clean it, as that can really cause it to dry out and Oooooh, that's itchy!!

OMG-DO NOT USE VASELINE! A and D ointment is sold in all drug stores and the application layer should be thin, several times a day.

There is a product you can order called Tattoo Goo. It is great because it doesn't draw the color out like many other oitments do. Ive used it for most of my tattoos and you can tell the diffrence betweenthe ones I used it on and the ones I didn't. Its completly natural as well so I feel safer using it.

Vaseline works, but it's kindof messy. I prefer to use Neosporin or Polysporin (same thing). It makes everything heal up way quicker than with Vaseline.

U could use aloe-vera gel ( takes the heat and sting out ) or try a nappy rash cream. Here in Australia we have a product called "Pro Tatt" which is brilliant but i dont know if u can get it in the states. Good Luck...
