a barb is the pointed end but in truth the tip has got to be curved at either side of it...a normal arrow head is the classic "V " shape easy to pull out of what ever it hit but when its barbed it gets caught ...............especially bad if you get one in your flesh..........thats why you see the cowboy hero in the movies getting the whole arrow pushed through him instead of it getting pulled out.so looking at the answers in here they are half right nobody mentioned about the barbed bit

A barb is a rear facing projection designed to keep the arrow in the target (or prey) by sticking backwards into the flesh. It works the same as the barb at the point of a fish hook and for the same reason. The point of the arrow is the very tip, the blade is the cutting edges of the broadhead, the barb is the rear facing projection that holds the arrow in the animal, the shaft is the body of the arrow, the fletching is the feathers, or vains that help stabilize it and the nock is the notch that the bow string fits into. By the way, using barbed arrows for hunting in most areas is illegal, except in the case of bow fishing. Hope that helped.
