Why do Most Christian-American women have Sex Before Marriage?

I am Muslim, African-American woman, and I truly do respect Christians-- as most of my family members are Christian..
But I notice that the majority of women in America who consider themselves Christian-- do have sex before marriage. I'm not talking about women who are "out there" or "promiscuous". But even church going women will live with their husbands before marraige, and have "long term relationships" involving sex.. I also notice the same trend among Christian men. This is very common today.

I don't judge people who have sex before marriage at all--But I notice that when Christian women ask me why I dont "have a boyfriend" (in a sexual relationship)--they will get upset or ridicule me when I say I dont believe in Sex Before Marriage.

Why have most American Christians become very accepting of sex before marriage?

There was a time when this trend was unacceptable to fundamental Christians. Unfortunately the influence of the world has had a profound effect. Many Christians now operate on the basis of "everyone else is doing it...why not me?" Or "Look at so and so... He/She is doing fine... God can't be that disapproving of that behavior." Many don't actually know that the God of the Bible they profess to believe, actually does disapprove of premarital sex.

I can remember when this behavior was not highly looked on...just 30-40 years ago...and by secular America at that.
Sadly, many 'modern' Christians would rather sacrifice the permanent on the altar of the immediate, as a friend of mine was fond of saying.

I've been asked "But how do you know if you are compatible?" My answer is through a lot of dating, a lot of guidance and counseling, a lot of parental advice, a lot of patience, and a little commitment (actually a lot!). My apologies for those Christians you have met that react wrongly to your stand... they are possibly ignorant of God's word and misled by the temptations of the world.

I'm not really sure but I feel like this is a huge generalization although I do understand where you are coming from. I think that the American culture glorifies sex and everywhere you look, movies, music, T.V. etc, people are sleeping around and it is portrayed as alright. Many people buy into American pop culture and when it is a part of everyday life it just seems "O.K." because everyone is doing it. In public schools as well, safe sex, not abstinence is taught and condoms are readily available to anyone who wants them. With all the glorification of sex before marriage in pop culture most people just see it as alright. I don't know if this answers your question but I hope it helps.

Here is why I believe that you think that Christians are all having sex before marriage: In our country most people will say that their Christians even if they're not. They say they are, but they don't believe in the Lord Jesus Christ and have not repented of their sins. Therefore you have a whole lot of "Christians" that are behaving innapropriately and ruining true Christians reputations. Because then when you think of Christians you tend to put them all in the same category. Just remember that not all people who say their Christians really are. Another thing you have to remember is that all people are sinful, so you do have Christians who have sex before marriage. But you also have all sorts of other religions that do the same. I hope this has helped you understand a little clearer.

That used to not be permitted by at least Protestant churches. The Bible says sex is to be saved until marriage, for one's spouse. Previously, a minister would refuse to marry them if he knew they were intimate before marriage. In long ago times, the couple would even have to stand in front of the congregation to repent and apologize. Times have changed (since the late 1960s with civil rights and then everyone else getting "rights"). Psychologists say it's very healthy to have a number of sexual encounters before marriage, so the person is sure he or she will be marrying the "right one". Plus, psychologists add that humans are sexual creatures; consensual sex is good and enjoyable and healthy. This opened the door to just about anything sexual. In the past, if one minister wouldn't marry them, a living-together couple would find a minister who would. Now, most ministers are not at all concerned with the sexual behavior of the couple who's planning a wedding. I guess there is mostly relief that the couple is "going to make things right" by finally getting married. This is one good example of how social and personal preferences have changed how the Christian Church operates.

I believe that really what it comes down to is the overall acceptance of sex in the American culture. Even though it is precieved as a sin to have sex outside of wedlock, since culture doesn't "slap our hands" for it anymore people are viewing it as ok. At the same time they don't want to give up their faith or what they have believed in for probably most of thier lives. So I think that the views of the church against it are getting lost in this culture.

It's not just Christian women. It's common in today's society to have sex before marriage.

The society we live in today is to blame for this. SO much sex and violence is promoted everywhere by the media so that's why many people choose to have sex before marriage. It starts out of curiosity, but once you've started it's hard to stop.

Marriage is an outmoded vestige of a slowly disappearing patriarchal system that was developed a long time to oppress and control people. We non-married practitioners of sexual intercourse do not ascribe to the patriarchal system. We choose when and with whom to have sex with. It was women's choice in the pre-patriarchal days, and still is in the post-patriarchal days.

Hello Victory,

Here in America, we don't have our parents decide who we marry. So our relationships are governed more by romance than parental decisions. We also don't have them circumcising our girls either. So it's more a cultural thing than a religious thing.

Since you aren't really able to date anybody, you have no way of understanding that I guess. I appreciate your question though.

HAVING SEX BEFORE MARRIAGE IS VERY ACCEPTABLE TO OUR SOCIETY TODAY NO MATTER TO WHAT KIND OF RELIGION ONE BELONGS. IT IS ALSO A GAUGE ON YOUR SEXUAL COMPATIBILITY WITH YOUR FUTURE SPOUSE. THESE IS VERY IMPORTANT IN ALL MARRIAGES. WHO WANTS TO MARRY A FRIGID PERSON ? HOWEVER HAVING SEX WITH OTHER PERSONS YOU ARE NOT SERIOUSLY CONSIDERING MARRYING MAY BE HARMFUL OR YOU MAY GET DISEASE. ALSO ANOTHER ADVICE FOR THESE COUPLES HAVE PRECAUTION AND USE CONDOM IF YOU DO NOT WANT TO IMPREGNATE HER.IF YOU ARE NOT YET READY FOR AN EARLY COMMITMENT.
