i have never seen a barb on the end of a hook the are farther up away frome the point the keep the point in by holding the fish from pulling out

a barb is what you get on the end of a fishing hook etc. to stop the hook from pulling out once it has been set.

It's a pointed part of a hook going in the opposite direction of the point so the hook won't pull out . Nature has the same thing in blackberries bushes
