Why is it that people think that people that are serving as enlisted members of the military dont have an education?

I'm sorry but that is just one of the things that really burns me. Before I could enlist I had to prove I graduated atleast high school, and if you had your GED you had to have atleast 3 hours of college before you could join, and that was the Navy's standards, and they continue to get more and more strict.

But why do alot of people seem to think that because I and alot of my friends are enlisted in many different services are stupid and that we don't have an education or we couldn't hack it in college?

Do you realize that we can and do take college courses while doing a full time job?

Or is it just a jealousy issue?

Remember: it takes a college degree to break it, and a high school diploma to fix it. (obviously this pertains to officers, no offense to any O's that are out there reading this.)

Sorry but there aren't alot of idiots in the military. And sadly enough most American's don't even realize it. Some of the most bright and intelligent people work for the military not for the major companies.

And did you know alot of peole that are famous actually did time in the military? Case example: George Strait, "King of Country" himself as he is now called did a tour of enlistment in the Army.

Thanks to all those that have served and are serving.

Because a lot of people just don't understand our modern military. There's now a much greater emphasis on educating yourself in order to move up the ranks. I know that the Navy is going to start requiring an associates degree related to your rate to make senior chief. I'm guessing that people also think that enlisted people aren't that bright because we bust our asses for relatively low pay compared to what you can make in the civilian world.

It is a dated mentality from back when people saw lower enlisteds as poor people looking for 3 square meals and a cot.

I was enlisted in the US Army for 5 years and I can honestly said that I worked with less idiots in the Army than in the civilian world. I met some people that were downright geniuses, any many of these only had a high school education. Everything else they learned was while on the job.

A lot of my coworkers took college courses whenever they could. It was dumb not to do it, since we could go during duty hours (think about it, you are drawing a salary to go to school), and every year we had an allowance for tuition assistance. This is without touching the GI Bill, we always had budget for 9-12 credit hours per quarter. On top of this, civilian education means promotion points, so in reality we couldn't afford to not take these courses.

One more thing: we had education centers in almost every base. If you had a little bit of initiative you could sign yourself for a course on whatever you wanted to. For free.

When was the last time that your employer paid you to take a class while on duty?

They think that because some cowardly prick anti American MF'er who used the system to shorten his commitment then come back to the states to slander the whole complete military system said so. Yes it's a jealousy issue. I've heard of way too many people who can't qualify for the Air Force or the Navy. The test is too hard for them.
Some of the most highly educated people I have ever met were those that were in the service. Serving their country means more than the high dollar. I've tons of corporate experience and military experience, and the military is way out on top.

I've had this argument with a few people on here about this subject, and you know what? People are going to believe what they want and as stupid as their view is on this, you just have to ignore it and know you're the one getting basically a free education and a lot of other training from the Military.
We have had to pay very little out of pocket for my husband's college education, and his entire law schooling will be paid for by his GI Bill. That is going to be so incredible for us! After he graduates, he can go right into his law practice without worrying about paying back student loans. Since we have children, that's going to help us out tremendously! Not to mention the retirement check we'll receive every month for the rest of our lives. I also know that a lot of training that is received in many Military jobs can help get you a very well paying civilian job even without a college education.
I have found the people that are usually quick to offer advice, opinions, and criticism about the Military are the ones that have had little or no affiliation with it whatsoever! You know that you're smart, educated and obviously willing to serve your country to keep the rest of us safe, so who cares what those few misinformed people think? Most of us fully agree that our US Military members are very intelligent, very capable, and very brave!
Thanks for what you do!
