He needs to start rehab right away, but first, I would suggest he go to a shrink because he obviously has some underlying mental issues that he is coping with. Many times, depression leads to addiction and other forms of compulsive behaviors, such as gambling or prolonged internet usage or uncontrollable spending of money on useless things. Talk to his folks and suggest they take him to a psychiatrist because he sounds like he is depressed, then start him on a rehab program to get him cleaned up. If all else fails, send his butt to the military, where they will quickly whip him into shape.

Drinking is an addiction and very hard to break. Tell his parents that he needs help. He may have to go into a detox program to get straightened out. I know you don't want to tell on your friend, and he may not forgive you, but you may save his life.

Tell him he has a problem and tell him to get over the girl. Tell his parents if he wont listen to you, they could put him in the AA or something like that.
