In a military war game exercise, what is meant by a "shooting solution"?

I know it means the enemy is "killed" but what exactly are the criteria for a "shooting solution"?

A shooting solution is not for wargames. For instance, on a submarine, when the weapons officer announces "I have a shooting solution!", it means that the sonar, computers and wepons have linked up and have determined the range to target, depth of target (if it is another submarine), water temperature, the firing submarine's depth, and has calculated the projected run time for the weapon (in this case, a Mk48 wire guided torpedo).

A shooting solution means that we have done the math and are ready to fire.

Solutions in my career field do not involve weapons, even though we might be warding off an attack (or other crises). So without firing a bullet the people who work in my office might fight off a hacker attempting to exploit information against the US. No weapon = not a shooting solution

but to be honest, this answer is going to vary accross the different branches of service and even accross career fields. In the AF, a firing solution vs the general term "shooting solution" are different depending on who you're talking to.

Actually, it does not mean the enemy is killed. It means that a trajectory is computed that is within the capabilities of the weapons assets at hand. Putting it another way, it means that you have the ability to shoot at the target with a strong probability of hitting it.
