I don't think it'd be a particularly bad thing for there to be a religion course in public schools. Religion is a huge part of modern society, and to be ignorant of (or worse, prejudiced about!) it is to lack understanding of a key factor in today's world. You just can't fully understand events in Iran, Saudi Arabia, India, England, Tibet, Israel, France, Norway, the United States, or a myriad of other nations if you don't understand religion. As for which religions should be taught, it should naturally be all the major ones, not just Christianity.

Personally, as a non-christian, I think the whole educational concept of "religion" is totally wrong. The teaching in schools of "religion" should be about the factuality of human thinking and believing, based on the concept of a mysterious invisible superbeing. Don't teach kids about Christianity, as if it were the sole source of what is right, while all the other kinds of beliefs automatically have to be wrong.
Teach kids about the true origins of this "superbeing" concept, going back to the earliest time, and how, over long periods, this idea branched out into many different thinking processes that would eventually launch different belief systems. They should be taught, in a totally non-partisan, completely objective way, and then be left, armed with a wealth of knowledge, to decide for themselves which, if any, of these belief systems they themselves might wish to pursue.
This present set-up, both in the realm of christianity, and in places where other religions dominate, is THE cause of all the strife, and religious conflict today.... because in every case, children have been taught in such a way as to indoctrinate them into the belief that "THIS religion is the one and only true faith, and all others are wrong, misguided, and born out of falsehood" This kind of childhood indoctrination has been going on for hundreds of years, and has been so powerful as it got increasingly hardwired into the fresh minds of the young, that it was inevitable one day the whole thing would start blowing up in all our faces. It has done just that. The boil has come to a head, burst, and all the messy, germfilled pus is spattering over all of us. It is going to take a longish course of the antiobiotic of sanity, common sense, and sound reason to clear us of this infection, and put all of us back on the path to health. How long the process will take is anyone's guess. We can't expect to cure in a few weeks what has been going on for generations, and quite possibly most of us alive today will not be around to see it. I'm simply confident that it will.

I think schools should be left to the basics reading, math, spelling, etc... School is not the place to force feed religion. To all those who think schools should teach religion, how would you like your child being taught the complete opposite of what you would teach them? After all the Bible says it is the parents resposibility to teach the religion. You cannot be so called 'religious' and then be a hypocrite to say I want religion in public school. I am a Christian and I say NO to religion in public schools.

My children go to public school and they attend a weekly bible study...they have 4 different religion classes that they can attend..i think all religions have a right...I find nothing wrong with them having bible study no matter what the religion there is...The USA was founded on religion if you don't recall learning this in your history class when you were in school. Why should children that attend church have to suffer for those who don't attend church or vice versa. We all have the right to our own religion and yes the schools should teach or at least have a class for each religion in there schools. No matter what the religion is. But many people don't believe this and don't want religion in schools. That's why the church and state is seperated today, due to people who don't want any type of religion near their children.

The vast majority of people do not believe that religion should be taught in public schools. However is it is ever decided that religion should be taught, I believe the time spent on any religion should be in proportion to the number of students that follow that belief.
In other words, if there are twenty-five Christian students and one Jewish, certainly the time studying Judaism should not be equal to the time on Christianity.
But to make it right religion should be kept in the churches, unless each church would interrupt the sermon to give an hour of algebra.

As a teacher, I can certainly see your point. Either teach all religions, or teach none. By the time that they get through the day with religion classes, it would be time to leave! Whoops, what happen to math, English, history, science, etc.? We ran out of time!! So, leave the religion classes out of public school curriculum.
As a Christian, I highly respect your question. We can only hope that the parents are teaching, or at least driving them to, the religious education that all children need.

I am a High School teacher....
I teach Geography and part of that is World Religions. We teach about the beliefs of Hiduism, Islam, Christianity and Buddhism.
Religion is part of life and must be taught are part of a thorough education.
Do we give biases and slants to one religion or anothert? No.
I am a Christian but I respect the students and their homes. If they ask me to expand on any religion I do - but in a neutral, educational manner.
We are also teaching some sex ed. to Freshmen, but in a neutral pros and cons manner.... I think it is very important that they get some clear education, not just what is on the streets and in the media.

I wouldn't have a problem with a religion class, with all religions taught, simply because the truth will set you free.
See just reading the Bible is spiritual, I would let the Holy Spirit do its job.
Its the taking religion out of school that I have a problem with. Teaching ONLY evolution, ONLY one side or theory.
My tax paying dollars pay for the school and I am told I cannot have these things included in the public education my children get. That is infringing on my Christian rights. Evolutionist wouldn't have it if we were only teaching lets say another theory, not even creation, but refused to teach evolution.
See when we take God out of everything, Christian rights are being trampled since this was a nation:
Under God
With Liberty and justice for all (that includes Christians)
One nation under God
In God we trust
When I watch my president, like him or not, swear on a BIBLE
This isn't something we are asking to be put IN, its something we are asking to stop taking OUT!!!!!!!
God in this country and in our school has been here before you and I and is now being erased.

I do not want religion taught in schools thank you very much. If we were to teach religion in schools it would be every religion, which might be a little bit difficult. I would like a world religions class, maybe in junior high or high school, to educate my child, but not as a normal class like math or english. I do want my child to be well rounded, to know the different religions, but I would like to teach my child about my religion on my time....I can't teach math, thats why the kid goes to school!

I don't think religion should be taught in Public Schools, there are schools that do that if that's what you want. I do think, however a time of prayer is appropriate. Silent prayer would give each an opportunity to think upon or petition their God or Deity for that day.
