Your question is not very clear, are you talking about yourself or a pet you own....??????

As for you stay away from all pets, there is a medicine you can take over the counter or from a Dr.

You pet will get the same allergies humans get, and yes there are medicines that can be given to them also..Your local Pet store can help you or a Vet can....

Dogs allergies and cat allergies are completely different, but that doesn't mean you might not be allergic to both. For instance, any time I handle a cat I have to wash my hands immediately afterwords or the next time I touch my face I will severely irritate my eyes. If a cat scratches me, the scratch immediately welts up and gets super itchy. If I handle a dog, then my reaction depends on the breed. Generally I become stuffed up, and with certain breeds my arms get slightly itchy. A dog scratch seems to have no real effect. If you have any friends who own dogs, go play with them to see if you react. If you're buying from a breeder you can ask to interact with their dogs, so you'll know exactly whether or not the breed will cause a problem.

It's not dogs as such, and it isn't dander. It is the proteins in the dogs saliva. Allergic reactions are caused by the bodies defence system going into overdrive when they sense certain proteins. Milk proteins, meat proteins, even Latex proteins. Not all proteins though, and it depends on the amount and strength of the protein. It is complicated but put in another way........ Dogs lick their body hair and leave traces of saliva on their hair which comes off when it touches you. You have now received traces of that saliva protein. Enough to give an allergic reaction. Also dogs lick faces and hands. It isn't all dogs because with dog protein, it is breed specific. In other words one dogs spit will cause a reaction to you and others won't. It is all about Proteins.

This is a quick note to all those saying about dander and hairs.
If you study Allergies you will discover that not all dogs cause an allergic reaction. It is nothing to do with their hair or the fact that they are dogs. It is the proteins in their saliva. The same as in horses and rabbits and cats and most furry animals we cuddle up close. The same can be said of the crocodile but we don't cuddle them so people never have a reaction to them. Bee stings, its the proteins in the venom that cause the body to go into overdrive and self destruct which is what happens in a massive allergic reaction. Anaphylaxis it is called.

You are no doubt allergic to the dander from dogs or even their hair. I own lots of dogs and keeping them clean and brushed
is a wonderful way to keep the dander down. Also, shedding dogs will have more allergens than those that don't have long coats. (Doxies, Westies, Poodles, Chihuahuas, Dobermans
Pits, etc.) are short haired dogs that will probably not be as much trouble to your "allergic reaction". I use a product called ProCare Pet Shampoo, for both dogs and cats. It contains Cedarwood Extract, Eucalyptus Oil, and Melaleuca (or Tea Tree)
Oil which conditions their coats and stops the shedding and dander problems. ProCare can be found at www.Melaleuca.com
if you'd like to talk about what other things I do for my dogs, feel free to e-mail me.

Good Luck and Be Well.

I'd go and get checked by the doc to see what exactly you are alergic to. It maybe the dander from the doc (so you bath it more), or its the hair (so get a dog that doesn't shed (eg a westie)). You see where I'm going with this. People are not just allergic to dogs they are allergic to a specific item. Reduce the occurance of that and you should be good to go.

My wife is 'allergic' to dogs - we have 3 and have no problems :-)

(2 westies and a border collie)

Look for a type of dog with very short fur. I have beagles and am slightly allergic to dogs. They don't bother me at all, but when I go to others' houses and interact with their longer-hair dogs, I get a little irritated.

Apart from the obvious- avoiding dogs, I have read that poodles are the best dogs for allergic people to own as they don't shed and their hair is supposedly less irritating

Anti histemines (Piriton etc) won't get rid of the allergy but will relieve the symptoms

You are not allergic to dogs, you are actually allergic to their fur, if you really want a dog, and please remember that they are a big committment buy a Shih Tzu as they have hair very similar to humans and not fur
