purple, pink, & magenta goes best with merlot because they're all in a shade of the reds & pinks.

It depends on what you are trying to achieve in your environment. I will give you a tip: if you have say a throw pillow with the color "merlot" in it, and it has a pattern, look carefully at the other colors used to compliment the merlot. Do you have a painting with the color in it? What other colors are used in the painting that you are attracted to? Designers use this trick all of the time. I based my color scheme on a chinese plate. It worked beautifully. You can always add whites and black to balance whatever colors you go with. Good luck to you and godloveya!

This might sound weird, but i always liked a deep purple merlot with a dark mustard color. It almost seems royal, but modern.

Usually decorators suggest complimenting colors with other shades of the same color, or shades of it's opposite.
Merlot being a deep red, green will complement it nicely. Not a neon or lime green, but a deeper, less bright green.
You could also couple it with other shades of red and deep purple.
