do any of you guys know of any scientists or sites showing any evidence global warming is not caused by human activity. I am convinced it is, but I'm having difficulty with people citing "evidence" that it is completely natural or that somehow the earth will overcome this problem on its own. You can rant on either side of this if you want, but I am looking for real evidence.

thanks Bob G, but what you have said regarding the high and low temperatures does not say anything to the fact that the ice is melting very fast...I can understand what you say, but the effect of something is causing the ice to melt, if you were correct, the ice would be re-manufactured every winter to catch up, but there is now a net loss of ice. and of the 17,000 scientists you mentioned, i would like to see a link. This Yahoo site is notorious for people to cite a "fact" that is either urban legend or simply false or misrepresented. I'm not putting you down, the things you say are interesting...this is the debate issues I was looking for. Thanks

this is a most quoted example:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Milutin_Milankovitch
Milankovich developed a solid theory about the cyclic orbit of our Earth in about 1920. However interesting this may be, it does not address the issue of global warming due to man's involvement (which was begun in the 1960's) good ol' Milankovich was not really looking at this aspect in 1920. this is an example of the limited and extremely dated material used by naysayers

to Dr. Henry: I would say the best way to measure something is not the volume of this or that or some hypothetical measuring stick...it is the direct, measurable effect 'a something" has...arguably, maybe global warming caused by humans is not the cause of the arctic & greenland glaciersdisappearing, and numerous other effects...but it is EXTREMELY coincidental that these have happened along with record levels of CO2 and other greenhouse gases...that is the problem I have with naysayers, they seem to ignore the MOST OBVIOUS THINGS. Fine if you think that there may be other factors involved, but come on you are not logical, if you don't believe that human activity is having an impact....it's like saying my neighbor doesn't have a cat, because I've never seen it, even though I see my neighbor bringing home cat food every week.

I agree with you on the lack of evidence regarding nonglobal warming. I havae heard scientists site cycles as the reason for the problem today. However, ice shelves were not melting and putting ice bergs near Australia before.
There is also the ID group that say the earth is only 6000 years old and God made it that way.
I wish we could get some scientists to have an effect on the current administration that is refuting all the treaties and even making things worse.

The global temperatures are changing, there is no doubt about it. The real question is the cause. If you'll review geological and archeological evidence you will find that the globe is actually cooler than it has been many times in the past, even somewhat cooler than average. Additionally, you will find good evidence that the global patterns seem to indicate that this trend should actually lead to global cooling and an ice age.

If you are really interested in learning about our changing climate you are going to have to study a lot because those who are preaching the global catastrophe theories are not going to introduce all the facts. For instance, how much have you heard about the warm records set in various locations? Quite a bit, I'd imagine. How much have you heard about the fact that many global cold records were set last winter? Any references at all? The fact is that all contra-indicate data is being suppressed. Ask yourself this, why did 18,000 environmental scientists in the US sign a petition that was later sent to Bush asking not to sign the Kyoto Protcols? Look it up, it's a fact

Another interesting fact is that the climate models they are using are not accurate! I'll bet you haven't heard that either? According to every model the antarctic should be accumulating large amounts of snow right now. It isn't! As a matter of fact, the snow pack is decreasing. That means the models which work on an integrated theory are wrong. Since the climate is completely interactive all over the globe, the failure to accurately forecast one major area, to be so far off in the weather patterns, means the climate model connot be used at all. Yet they still talk about the climate models as if they are gospel truth. Very scary!

I have a strong science background and two scientific degrees. In order to form my own opinion I had to visit hundreds of sites and dig up evidence myself. Don't follow the crowd and be buffaloed. You've already done well to ask the question but now you need to do the research to find the answers. Remember that somebody is always claiming one disaster or the other is coming. Just because they make the claim doesn't mean its true.

Good luck

If what is true to the old saying in Geology that "the past is key to the present" then according to paleoclimatologists the Earth has experienced series of warm up and cool downs.

Take for instance the Great Permian Extinction, when 95% of all on this planet died off, it was due to mainly climatological changes. And this has been proven. As far as I can reckon, there were no humans present at this time.

I firmly believe that we don't know enough, are we contributors, I think, are we the main reason, it remains to be seen.

What I will say though is the atmosphere is becoming more concentrated with toxins... due to technology of the 20th into the 21st century. Look at major cities of the world and the smog that perpetually hangs over them

You are not going to find any recent studies by credible scientists. 90% of the scientific community says that there is global warming and that people have some affect on it. What the latest controversy is: How much are people actually accelerating it, and is it too late to do anything anyways. All agree that global warming exists. If you are doing a paper, I suggest rephrasing the topic. In high school, I found a lot of current evidence against (1995ish) but that is all obsolete and even the scientists who wrote it are now going at the problem from a different angle.

Good luck!

Global warming is not caused by humans but it's effect is amplified. We've roughly doubled the amount of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. As for the Earth overcoming the problem on its own, this is quite possible, there are many scientists who would support this, based on Milankovitch's work on orbital cycles inducing global warming/cooling. I reckon if you search for Milankovitch you might find people that think the Earth will balance out in time. I think it will, but over a very long time (10,000 years). I'm not quite a proper scientist yet though, in my final year of my BSc!

Put it this way, if human activity in the way of burning fossil fuels to produce electricity etc...were to cease then the levels of CO2 in the atmosphere would surely decrease...that is a fact.

the argument surrounding this issue is how significant a role human activity plays on co2 levels in the atmosphere

It's true that the earth has undergone temperatures rises and reductions in the history of the earth, however, this is the first time that humans are having a direct influence on climate changes.

There is far too much evidence that supports this theory rather than evidence to refute it.

The two best sites are given as references. No scientist I know refutes that global warming exists (even the Anti-Al Gores like me). The questions are how much and is it measurable, what causes it, can we do anything about it if we needed, and do we bankrupt countries to do something that probably will not work.

Just by the way, if there was a scientist that could prove it was not due to human involvement, they would shout it from the highest mountain.

The whole point of peer reviewed science is making your peers acknowledge that they were wrong and you were right.
