Curling I can help you with. Simply put, curling irons and hair spray and more hair spray and more hair spray and then just to be safe a little more hair spray.

For fighting frizz, my friends & I used to condition with very warm olive oil.

Many people did not do much to style their hair then, other than a feathered cut and combed.

They did have hot rollers, curling irons, and sponge rollers to curl hair.

We also had hairspray and a gel called "Dippity Do" that was a blue gel that made hair stiff but would hold a curl or help to straighten hair, but it did not have much movement.

Guys, and some girls with very fuzzy hair, used Brylcream, which would slick back the hair but was sort of greasy looking and feeling.

We also had perms so when the above options failed, well, that explains why you see old pics of white people with afros.

Oils and herbal conditioners to keep "frizzies" to a minimum. As now, regular trimming keeps split and dead ends away. Rollers got curls of the type they wanted where they wanted it and hairspray kept it there. Styles of using curlers of different types and the techniques involved should still be available somewhere on the net. Some women I knew would iron their hair to straighten it...some still do, though there are gadgets for that now.

During the 70,s to straighten my hair i used to iron my hair(this is how)place the hair between 2 sheets of brown paper then hold the hair between the 2 sheets with the hot iron then slowly pull your hair keep doing the hair in sections their you go straight hair BUT you can only do this if your hair is shoulder length hair longer THE 70,s WAS THE BEST TIME TO BE YOUNG

Being a girl in the 70's, mine was straight and long ( as were a lot of girls my age). I had a friend who straightened her hair with an iron, just put it on the ol' board and ironed away!! I use to put my hair in those spongy curlers when I wanted it curled. Can't help you with the fuzzies.

my sister used to set her hair on orange juice cans because her hair was curly even when long.....it smoothed it out and gave her a little curl. i used to braid my hair when it was damp and it was soft and wavy. i tried to iron my hair a few times, scary!!! we also used curling irons.
