Most of the auxilliary ships are now run not by the Navy, but by the United States Naval Service (USNS). They are painted grey light Navy ships, most were former Navy ships, and if you drive by a Navy port, you will see them sitting there - you can tell the difference because they have two strips on their stacks. They are not manned by Navy personnel, but by USNS crews, but regularly sail in convoy with Naval ships they are supplying.
