How can I convert a video file to high-definition, using my computer? If I copy it from the source, a dvd, how can I copy it to a high-quality file format?

I used a program called Xilisoft DVD to iPod converter. It copied the video to mp4 format, and it is not good quality. When I play the video from the disk drive on my computer, I get much better quality.

How can I get this good quality, only saved on my computer so I don't have to use the dvd to see the video?

yes, you may try a free SUPER, but it is so buggy.

I recommend AVS Video Converter: http://www.best-video-converter.com/avs-video-converter.html

The program is very simple.
- install and run it
- open *.ifo or *.vob files from a DVD (*.ifo is preferable)
- click "To AVI"
- select one of available profiles or click Edit Profile to manually set the output video profile parameters: try to set higher bitrate to get better output video quality
- click "Convert Now"

The higher bitrate, the better quality!!!

Find a better converter would be my answer.

Try SUPER by eRightSoft, or ask around videohelp.com (don't spam the forum either)
