I want to manipulate text from a pdf file. What software will allow me to do this? Is there anything that is free or cheap? Thank you.

.
If you have the version of Adobe that you can download from Adobe ACROBAT
it will have that function to capture text.
RIGHTclick this link >
select Open in New Window
http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html

At the top of the Adobe window, there is a little outlined square > click that
Then you can use your cursor to
begin at the top right > left click mouse button >
hold down and drage the square to go around all the text you want > let go mouse button.

Now RIGHT click inside the square
select COPY

Open a WORD document
RIGHT click in the body
select paste.

Note that you can not copy from different pages in .pdf files
so you can be clever at copy and pasting them equally,
into the Word document.

If you have the PDF Reader, you can extract the Text and Graphics in most cases (Some documents don't allow it.) but not to reinsert it or create a PDF.
Some HP printer software, does allow you to Print to a PDF. Select output as PDF instead of a printer. It saves in My Documents folder.
You could also print off the Document and then scan it back in using an OCR program (Most Scanners come with a basic version.)

If you have Word, you can convert some PDF files to text, but without Word, I don't know of any free, or cheap programs to do this.

most likely you are using adobe acrobat reader. when you open this program or the pdf file, you will have a tab to convert the file to text. just copy and paste the section you want into a word document and then you can edit it all you want.

I use Winrar. This a good link to download it http://bitly.com/1p3PQHZ
The best choice to open (extract) zipped files is definitly WinRar. It's able to decompress a lot of different files as zip,rar,iso,7z,jar and much more.

Adobe Acrobat, ie the viewer itself does it,
Look for the T icon on the edit bar it puts in into cut and paste text mode, or look in help.
