I'm 33 and as my getting older I'm noticing darker hairs on my upper lip and a few hairs on my chin. I try to pluck the hairs on my chin and use Neet on my upper lip or get it waxed but it just comes back again in a couple of dayz. Is there anyway to stop the hair from growing back or at least control it?

Hi there,

I am also 33 and guess what? - I am also plauged by hairs under my chin, the sides of my face and lip hair.

I pluck as that is the cheapest option but does effectively remove the hair but only temporarily for a day or two. I have to keep on plucking every few days because the hairs do grow back so quickly.

I used to use a razor but they came back even worse and ended up having more hairs and especially under my chin! they are visible in day-light unless they are concealed with a good strong foundation, but when you know that they are there, you just want to razor them all off I don't recommend this at all or use wax as that does not work either and because the hairs are too strong at the roots.

I used wax before but you really have to keep putting the wax strip over the same places where the hair is and keep ripping it off and it really hurts the skin and only removes a few hairs, not the entire lot, so they only really work on legs and not really the face. Even hair removing creams are useless on the face because not only do they burn the skin, they do not remove thicker stubborn hairs that are under the chin. Nair is quite good and does remove lip hair and side of face hair but you have to leave it on for a good five minutes but does remove the hair - does not remove under chin hair though.

The only permanent method:

Hair lazor treatment permanently removes hair on the face, but it is very expensive and you have to keep going to get it done until eventually the roots of the hairs are gone altogether. It can take up to a year or more to get them removed permanently this way, but each session costs around $40 for the face or £60 in the uk depending on which country you are in.

I haven't tried it myself because I can never afford the treatment but I just pluck for an hour each day and have now gotten use to it but I do have quite a lot under the chin because I stupidly used a razor to remove them when I was 25 and now have hundreds of hairs I never used to have! - so don't be tempted by razors - use either tweezers or creams as the cheapest method unless you can afford lazor treatment.

It is nothing to be ashamed of though and all women have facial hair to some extent and those who have more like me, are the ones who have used razors that have made the problem so much worse. But this is experienced advice and hope that you will find a good cream that will remove lip hair - it does work!

As you get older your levels of estrogen drop. If you've got relatively high level of testosterone you'll then tend to find that you develop darker, coarser hair in the same areas males do. By the time they're in their fifites many women have significant moustache and beard growth.

As to your options, they could be summed up

1. Depilatory creams etc. -- work ok on very fine hair, but as the hair gets darker and coarser, depilatories strong enough to destroy the hair also burn the skin

2. Laser -- can have a long term effect if the hair is dark and your skin is light and it's NOT hormonally-stimulated -- but yours almost certainly is hormonally-stimulated. Can also cause burning and scarring.

3. Electrolysis -- can be very expensive and can cause extensive scarring and burning. But can be permanent.

4. Waxing/Plucking/Threading -- all involve pulling the hair out by the roots. If the growth wasn't hormonally-stimulated this can, if repeated often enough, weaken the root. Sadly, if the growth is hormonally stimulated it can also have the opposite effect and strengthen the growth -- the only hair removal method to increase the hair growth

5. Vaniqa -- a prescription cream which reduces the growth somewhat. Expensive and a nuisance and doesn't stop the need to remove the hair.

6. Shaving -- doesn't increase the growth but cuts the hair off at the skin surface. Some of the men's-type electric razors actually put the hair under very slight tension and depress the skin so that the cut end of the hair ends up below the surface. In my view, as in the normal way of things you would expect moustache and beard growth to increase, a good men's-style electric razor from Norelco would be the least troublesome way for you.

Wax, wax, wax! Waxing will make the hairs grow back lighter and slower. Although plucking does the same thing as waxing, when you wax you get all the hairs at once, saving you time.

I would shave it. I have shaved mine for years and it doesn't grow back darker or lighter. My skin is still smooth and soft. Waxing can be a pain and expensive.

You may have a hormonal problem, you have to go to a doctor quickly when it's still at it's beginning, and even to hear other doctors opinions,I had a teacher of chemistry who had such problem and she was taking a hormonal treatment.

Some nationalies feature women with bigger mustaches, beards, chest, and leg hair than your average american dudes... Luckily that comes with that little extra testosterone boost that makes them so good in bed (after they shave of course)...

Some doctors do laser hair removal which is permanent, but it can be pricey, shop around.
