my son didnt eat solids either untill he was about 1 1/2 and he is 3 now and still gags and spits out potatoes.. so maybe he doesnt like the foods you are letting him try? i jus kept trying to feed him different types of foods and finaly after what seemed like forever he began to eat them some children are just more picky than others as long as he is getting the nutriants from the formula or breast milk and jar food he will be fine

I think it's a nursing strike and I think it's very normal. The best thing to do, if you want to continue nursing, is to wait it out. As you said, he's gaining weight. So you know he's not starving. He will likely get plenty hungry and take the breast again when he's ready. I want to tell you that both my sons did this. One did it at almost 9 months and one did it at 11 months. It only took a couple of days and then everything was back to normal and they ate again. (And the reason he's refusing formula is likely that it doesn't taste good after all the yummy breast milk he's had.) If you're still worried, then go ahead and contact your doctor. But also contact a La Leche League leader or a lactation consultant. (Doctor's don't always know about breastfeeding!) And sometimes you have to go with your own gut as a parent.

You are going to have to introduce the consistency of a lumpy texture very slowly. He isn't used to eat and with it has to roll it round his mouth more. If he is given it more often he will get used to it, some babies spit more out thant they eat.
You could try getting a jar with bits and adding it to a jar that is smooth so it lessens the lumps and is easier for him to get to grips with.
I know its scary, but if he gags and pukes then he is able to shift anything that sticks toa certain extent, dont let this put you off.
Could also try letting him "taste" bits from your meals.
He is eating, so thats good, is he eating finger food, such as toast etc.... That is usually great as they can suck it till they learn to chew.
If you are concerned you need to speak with your health visitor as they will be able to inform you based on what you have already tried and experience of problematic eaters. He will get there you just need to keep trying, persevere and find the right route for him.
My daughter was never that keen on mashed potato, so maybe he just doesnt like it, have you tried just part blending what you eat?

This would be something I would definately talk to his doctor about the next visit. Maybe the mashed potatotes were just too thick for him. If he's only been eating jarred baby food and no other "people" food then it would be hard for him to adjust to regular food. i would suggest trying him with certain things every now and then. Have you gave him any other table foods? Spaghetti was one of the first dinners that my daughter had.

Yes, my daughter!!! Try your son on other foods too, puree up some foods as well. My oldest daughter lived on yogurt until she was nearly 2 yrs old, she hated anything in her mouth with the slightest lump in it. My mum gave me the best pep talk when my kids were young and i worried about things with them. She asked me what i was worried about last year, i told her i don't know, this time next year your son will be munching on stuff. If you are stressed about it he will sense it. Take a deep breath and enjoy your son. How could he have mashed potatoes on Xmas if he is 10 months, did you mean Thanksgiving?

Jarred baby food is a solid. Move him onto toddler meals. Maybe he just did not like potatoes.

Babies can stay on jar food for a long while, but you also have to watch what you introduce to him. Maybe the mashed potatoes had to much salt/pepper or regular milk/butter or maybe he is just elergic to potatoes. Just deep trying to introduce foods to him.

My son are jarred baby food until he was about 13 months old...don't worry about it. Keep introducing the solids. One thing that really got my son into eating and self feeding were the Gerber Puffs. They disolve right in babys mouth and my son loved them. Like I said take your time, be patient he'll get used to it!

what? are you serious? My 8 month old eats table food, you just have to keep on trying, the child might have a strong gag reflux, just give him small amounts at a time, and gradually build this up. You are suppose to start table food around 6 months, so this is foreign to him, just like when people don't introduce a sippy cup to their 6 month old and then changing from a bottle to a sippy cup is very hard. Just keep on trucking and trying

Youre son will gag and throw things up when she eats solids for the first few times. Its normal hes learning touse his gag reflex. It doesnt mean hes not ready. I know its scarry but start out small and work your way up gagging is totally normal its his way to keep from choking. If he starts to cough let him cough it out or throw it up if he needs to this will keep him from choking do not pat his back this could lodge it in the back of his throat. His gagging is a natural reflex and its helping hin learn so take it slow and give it another chance
