What is the diffrence between a hotel and a motel??

Hotel... rooms contained within a building.
Motel... rooms may be within a building, but generally have individual outside entrances to each room. (Motel is short for "Motor Hotel" which means you can drive up to, and park outside of your room)

The word "motel" is actually a contraction of the term Motor Hotel. In the 50's and 60's longer distance travel by car became more popular. Prior to that, most travel was by train. Hotels were located in cities, and people took local taxis or other transportation from the train station to the hotel.

With more people traveling by car, a new form of hotel became more popular. It offered parking for the car traveler, many times just outside the door of the room. People traveling by car could pull up, and not have to carry luggage long distances to the room.

A motel will offer parking, a hotel may or may not. Usually now a hotel will be fancier, with more amenities than the motel. This is not always the case however, as some motel chains have upgraded their facilities!

The term is now mostly interchangeable, with motel tending to be used for lower cost facilities!

A guest might stay at a hotel for a week or longer on business or pleasure, and “extras” are expected. Hotels commonly offer Jacuzzis, gyms, pools, restaurants, room service, cable television, Internet connectivity, and other luxuries. Hotel parking lots are separate, and in many cases, the walk from the lot to the lobby can be a trek. Some hotels provided shuttle service.

While the average motel may not have the accoutrements found at hotels, it offers easy access, reasonable rates, and a less complicated experience. This makes a motel ideal for a night’s sleep as travelers make their way through the country’s less traveled roads to an ultimate destination. Some motels even feature individual cabins set among picturesque woods, perfect for a longer stay to get away from it all.

Motel 6 is one of the largest motel chains in the United States, offering an experience somewhat similar to that of a budget hotel. Motel 6’s are multi-story chains with direct access parking and are usually located just off a freeway or highway for convenience. The more typical motel is found in mountain towns and along smaller, more picturesque highways.
