The Island of Saba is located about 28 miles south of St. Maarten. The island is a dormant volcano that emerges vertically out of the Caribbean Sea on all shores to a peak of 3000 feet. There are not any beach areas on the entire island since the entire shoreline is made up of cliffs that drop straight down into the ocean

The locals claim that Saba's runway is the shortest commercial airport runway in the world. It is 400 meters (1300 feet) in total length. The span of runway between the white lines demarking the "usable" runway length measures just under 1000 feet. There are not any overrun areas on either end of the paved runway where shear cliffs immediately drop off over 200 feet into the sea. Officially, the runway is permanently closed to all air traffic as is designated by the "X" on each end. However, aircraft are permitted to operate on Saba by obtaining waivers from the Netherlands Antilles' Civil Aviation Authority.

Hi >
A lot of your answer so far are Ok.
I would add Khasab, in the Sultanate of Oman.
It is a dirt strip, and extremely short.
We hit and destroyed the fencing at the end on take-off in a Hercules, or C130. With only three crew & a bit of cargo.
It sort of knackered the landing gear. But obviousley all was well at the end of the day.
A daft thing to attempt, and commercial runways are therefore much more popular.
Hey Ho.

The one the Cajun airline landed on. They busted through the fog and hit the runway, hit the brakes, through out the anchor, did everything to get stopped. The pilot wiped the sweet from his face and said, god dog man that's the shortest runway I never did saw. The co pilot says ya man, but look at how wide that thing is.

If you mean, "what is the shortest runway on which a non-VSTOL (Harrier) or rotary wing (helocopter) aircraft can take off and land," the answer would be an aircraft carrier (although we do use catapults and arresting wires for acceleration and deceleration, respectively)

Otherwise, it all depends on the aircraft. Ultralights take off and land in less than 100 yards, powered parachutes in less than 50 yards. Heavy jets need 8,000 to 12,000 feet to land.

Tioman Airport in West Malaysia (Just off the coast) (ICAO : WMBT, IATA: TOD)

Longitude: 104° 9’ 36” E
Latitude: 2° 49’ 5” N

When I use to fly there in Dornier 228's it was 694 Metres long. It was extended in 1999 to 992 Metres. Now only Dash 8's fly there.

Heck, Thats easy. Just build a Zenith 801 stol experimental plane and install a NASCAR V-8 all aluminum Ford engine in it like I did. All I need is a spot about 130 feet or so long for take offs, landings require a little more space. .. Pics of the beast are at www.haaspowerair.com.
