How often should you replace your toothbrush?
When

For the best results from brushing, you should replace your toothbrush:

At least every three months
When bristles begins to show wear
After an illness such as a cold or flu
Why

Reasons why you should replace your toothbrush frequently:

Toothbrushes just simply wear out
Toothbrushes are often worn enough to be replaced before they look worn
Bristles breakdown and lose their effectiveness
Worn and fractured bristles are a breeding ground for germs, fungus and bacteria
Worn toothbrushes can damage gum tissue
Children's toothbrushes

Require special attention and monitoring because:

Bristle wear occurs quickly because children often brush with uneven strokes
Children sometimes chew or bite on their toothbrush bristles
Did you know

People who wear braces should change their toothbrushes frequently because braces break down and fracture bristles and the toothbrushes lose their effectiveness.

A new toothbrush is 30% more effective at removing plaque.

There's no set time. The answers about changing after an illness are all good. If you have not been sick, you should change your toothbrush when it no longer looks like a new brush. One of my patients said, "I get a new brush when my old one starts to get a little bristle sprung." Not a bad description. If you want to be really neurotic about it, buy two brushes the next time you get a new one. Every now and then, compare your "in use" brush with the brand new one. When you can tell the difference, it's time to start using the new one and buy another one to compare to the "in use" brush the same way. Of course, once you've done this once or twice, you wont' need to keep one in reserve.

i'd say when you get a new toothbrush from the dentist. Or just every 1-6 months. It's always good to have a clean toothbrush!

Dentists recommend every 6 months. I change mine every 3 because I brush obsessively. Any time you get sick you should buy a new toothbrush to use after you are all better.

3-6 months is the ideal timing but if the brushes on on your toothbrush is looking raggedy before the time limit, then you should change it then.

every 3 to 6 months, depending on how often you brush. Also, if you get sick, you should replace to get rid of the germs.

HI,
WE HAVE ALWAYS TOLD OUR PATIENTS TO REPLACE THEIR TOOTHBRUSHES EVERY MONTH, DUE TO BACTERIA LEADING TO INFECTIONS. ALSO, NEVER KEEP YOUR TOOTHBRUSH OUT IN THE OPEN. KEEP IT IN THE BATHROOM DRAWER OR CABINET. STUDIES HAVE SHOWN THAT FECES (POOP) PARTICLES FLY THROUGH THE AIR AND LAND ON YOUR TOOTHBRUSH. YUCK, GROSS. AND REMEMBER, ALWAYS USE A SOFT TOOTHBRUSH. GOOD LUCK AND REPLACE AWAY!

Ever 3 Months or less

it should be every few months unless you manage to ruin it before then. Once the bristles start to splay then you really need a new one as they can cause tissue trauma.
