Switch to every other day. Your ab muscles need resting time. Maybe get an excercise ball and do your crunches using that for a bit more of a challenge would be beneficial, because it sounds like your body is not really getting a good workout from the crunches anymore. Crunches ARE better than sit ups. You may also want to do some side crunches. They are like regular crunches, only you go to the side. You should google it for better details.

Crunches are better for you, but I don't think it hurts to throw sit ups in from time to time as well. Side crunches are important too. As far as the number....maybe you should stop counting and concentrate on the actual contracting of the muscle. You may not need all the reps if you just slow it down a little and really feel the muscle. The range of motion is very short, so make sure you are doing them correctly.

Crunches are better. You would probably benefit more by doing some leg raises as well. Lay flat on your back and lift your legs about 6" off the floor hold for about 10 seconds then repeat 10 times total.

get that ab lounge
you don't need to do your crunches on it, but you need to at least stretch backwards in it for 10 minutes every now and then
