An ELECTRIC fence?!?!? Have you ever put your finger to one of them. Electric fences are for horses, not dogs. Do you mean the invisable fence?? That works. Or get a regular fence.... or teach your dog not to go anywhere.

I use a regular chain link fence with a hot wire that is on the top edge all the way around. That way the dog can still see every thing but after 1 experience with the hotwire he will never try again. Mine is the type used to hold cattle in a pasture fenced with barbed wire and cost $60

honestly, you are all nuts! For the lady who said just take your dog for a walk or get a fence. You take your dog out for a walk in below zero weather, or when its pouring rain every time he has to go...Really? We live on a very busy road, fence is not an option it would look ridiculous...its expensive...nothing wrong with invisible fence, the dog could have its freedom and be safe too...get a grip!

Don't do that. She's a little dog. She doesnt need that bad of a fence. Get a long cable and put her on it when she goes out. One that she can still run around on. Dogs are smart. She would find a weak spot and you would have waisted your money. An electric fence for a horse, maybe, but a little dog. NO WAY!

the invisible fence company. it is the only one that works. they even do training sessions. they will try to sell you the delux traning sessions which they come to your house for 3 months 3 times a day. DONT BUY THIS IT IS STUPID. by the one were they come 4 weeks once a week. thats what I used for my high-strung rat terrier. they will also start by traning them in the house with an external fence so they dont "hug" the house. dont use an electric fence unless she is over 6months! take her out on a leash untill then.

We are using a wireless fence with our dog. She has been zapped twice and yes it hurt but she does not cross the line. We worked very hard with her to make sure she understood that when the collar is off she can cross the flag barrier (we have neighbours who cannot take their dogs for a walk as the dog is fearful of crossing the line even when the collar is off.

ok all the animal tree hugging people here are driving me nuts.. If your dog has any inteligence after your dog gets a mild stimulation it will learn not to go near the boundries... it is not cruel. i wish people would stop comparing dogs to humans... they are not humans and do not have feelings or act like humans..

Get an invisible fence... they are the most professional... It will not hurt your dog... i guess if you were afraid to shock your dog you could let him get run over by a car.. that may be better i guess..

My mother taught me if you walk into the street you could get hit. I guess I could try explaining that to my dog? When I disobeyed that rule, my mother loved me enough to spank me and ground me. Guess I should "ground" my dog. I don't think he will understand what that means, but!!! If I choose to use an electric fence, that will surely get his attention to know his boundaries. I could be wrong? I commend your efforts to contain your animal responsibly. As when they get out of your property line without a lease, you pay the fine and they do not. : )

I think about a 10 gauge wire hooked directly to a power sub-station is the best. The combination of the heavy wire and nearly unlimited power insures that you won't cause a power outage when 'ol phido hits the wire!

Give me a break!!! Why would you want to shock a 14 pound little Westie??? Why don't you simply fence in your back yard so that she can run outside free from fear of being electrically shocked? This makes me so angry I could scream. Take your dog for regular walks and, during the rest of the day, let her go out into your regular fenced-in backyard. I can't bear to think of a cute little Westie (or any other dog) being shocked. I'm sorry to come across like this, but I'm upset by your idea.
