i have a decker sized rat terrier. he is agressive with other dogs (more like bossy not aggressive), hyper, and stubborn, but briliantly smart! We taught him how to ring a bell when he needs to go. Is there any way to make him less hyper and agressive?

we only use the shock theripy for jumping and it is almost never used, when he gets ready and he sees the remote he stops him self. he is also only agressive to the other dog when she is in his crate.

Hyper and aggressive are the key traits for any terrier. :-P

That being said, the best way to reduce those tendencies is work and exercise. He should be getting at least 1 hour of total walking time during the day; if you can get him to a park to run around, or doggie daycare, to burn off extra energy that would be even better.

If he's intelligent, trying finding him a sport or activity to play: flyball, agility, search & rescue, etc. Dogs are happiest when they're at work, so find something he's good at in your area and give him a job to do!

I had a rat terrior. It is thier nature and breeding to be extremely hyper and agressive. if he isnt neutered do it. they have meds for dogs besides shock treatments. It would be better to choose one dog and give the other to a good home as to do shock treatments and never get another dog but the one you want to keep and yes they are smart and very domminating. the other dog has to be unhappy to so between the shock treatments and the unhappiness in the other dog sounds like you need to make some choices to make everyone happy

Little dogs are usually big in personality maybe this is a way of protecting themselves?I have seen the smallest dog chase away a great Dane.Maybe this is a protective mechnism????

Jessie, if there is let me know.

Mine, Ginger, is doing crack or something. But is she ever smart! And protective and loving. She also has no idea of backing down from much bigger dogs, ever!

What a voracious appetite!

Electro-shock therapy usually does the job! Once poochie gets a taste of that 'ol AC, he'll settle right down!
