I can relate. I personally avoid those people and the uncomfortable situations and celebrate it at a friends house or depending on the holiday just recuperating from a busy schedule alone.
I enjoy the meaning of the holidays especially Christmas. I love Christmas songs.
If I allowed them to take this enjoyment from me would be another way of giving them power over my life.

No, I don't like my family that much either. Not so much them as I hate the awkward as hell small talk. They know I'm going through a lot but still ask questions, which makes me feel uncomfortable. I too have no cousin's my age (the little kids are cool but my Dad yells at me to hang with the "adults"). Hell, they're not even really my cousins, 90% of the people there are my aunt's in-laws anyway..

Well you shouldn't hate the holidays because of this. You need to look at your family and make a vow that when you get married that you will do things differently and break the cycle of bad family. Of course, minimal exposure would be great. Make your life different and be glad for the things you do have, even if they may not be as good as someone else.

You can make your own family. There are nice people at your church / school / office / factory / softball team / neighborhood who are going to be alone for Thanksgiving and Christmas. Ask them to your house for a potluck dinner. Tell the people you grew up with you have other plans. If your house is big enough, invite a dozen. Make everyone over 40 an honorary aunt or uncle, with strict instructions to tell everyone under 18 "My, how you've grown". Tell everyone under 18 they have to ask at least one "Aunt" or "Uncle" a question that will bring out a long, funny story:
Aunt Mable, tell us how you met your husband . . .
Uncle Bill, tell us something you did in college . . .
Uncle John, did you inhale?

Your dislike for your family is an inward plea to self that you can do better in life than they did. Hang in there and shoot for the stars. I have no communication with my family for the same reasons. I get by with a little help from my friends.
You are not the ocean receiving a drop, you are the drop in the ocean. Don't let surroundings limit your hopes.

I would say you are ok in feeling this way. But It is rather rude to not show up if invited. The best thing you could do is plan to be on a vacation some place far away for the hollidays and then you will not be expected to be there and not have to feel guilty.

I would focus on the ones you like to be around that are good and make the most of it, Everybody dislikes to do something or a certain time of the year. I hope yours is better this year. Good luck.

honey it is normal to hate the family gatherings. but you still have to suck it up and deal with it, trust me my biggest dread for the holidays are my sister. she is the worlds worst liar and bum. doesn't even pay her own bills. just lets my parents pay the way for her and her no good boyfriend who is married to another woman and has a daughter stuck in the midst of it all. so yes it is very normal to hate the gatherings but try to remember the true reason for the season.
