I am searching for organizations that will donate furniture and other furnishings for my apt. I am on public assistance and need additional help furnishing my new apt. I live in New York City. I could also use organizations that have furniture at a nominal price.

Try Help 1 Up, www.help1up.org.
They are the National Furniture Bank and might have contacts in NYC.

There is a web site called "Freestuff.org". It's an organization of various people around the world that have items to "give away" as long as you can pick them up when you promise to do so. They don' t deliver, so if you don't have transportation, don't make the commitment.
