Neither had a 1 or a 5 because the teacher picked numbers between. When Sheila said I don't know John's number it means he had to have had a 2 or a 4. So, Sheila must have had a 3 because it was the only number left.

Unless the teacher gives John the 1st number & Sheila the following number. There would be too many choices to get in one guess.
1-2 2-3 3-4 4-5
2-1 3-2 4-3 5-4
Is it a trick question?
Two whole numbers between 1 & 5 IE 2&3 or 3&4
The answer is contrived, normal logic don't work

The teacher did not tell the students not to tell each other their numbers, therfore all they have to do is ask eachother. In order to know Sheila's number, you have to know John's and hers, because John's could be 3, which means Sheila's is either 4 or 2. You must know them both to get the answer correct the first time. Once again, the teacher did not tell them to keep their number secret. It's a trick question.

We do not know, but thanks for the brainteaser. Sheila would only know if she had a 1 or 5, but unless they blabbed to each other, there are several combos available for the 2-3-4 sequence.(2-3,3-2,3-4,4-3).
My head hurts!

If not, it would have to be 2&3 or 3&4.
