Sorry but check out the first syllable in the name and there is your answer. They have long hair that gets matted around the first syllable word and they are hard to maintain, due to their hair style. They are very pretty to look at but I went to buy one a long time ago and you would not believe the matted mess the parents were in they almost couldn't move because they were so matted. You couldn't even tell what color they were.Go to the library or to PetsMart or Petco and get a book there you will find your answer.Good luck Happy Holidays

I had one and she had Hip displasia, nipped, underbite, Was not too happy with kids and barked a lot. Must be kennel trained to house break. I did take her to training and she ended up one heck of a good dog. But I would not suggest them for families. Sorry just my opinion.

- They're hard to housebreak
- They're hard to train
- They have chronically runny eyes, which builds up into gunk you have to scrub away every day
- They require frequent grooming (daily brushing at home, plus professional grooming at least every 2 months).
- They're prone to ear infections
- They're prone to respiratory problems such as collapsed tracheas
- They become spoiled easily and tend to bite or growl when they don't get their own way
- They have bad teeth and must have them brushed regularly and be given professional cleanings at the vet every few years
- They tend to be nervous/excited pee-ers

I don't know about shih-tzu DOGS, but in shih-tzu CATS.....
they have eyes problems, breathing problems, kidney problems, underbites/teeth problems, and it you don't take care of them properly they can develope some nasty personalities. Their fur is VERY high maintenance. You MUST brush them everyday. you MUST clean their eyes everyday. You MUST examine their ears everyday.
