Its treated with Ivermectin but it must be done under a veteranarian's supervision. If the dog already has heartworm it will depend on how servere it is and whether is will be possible to save the dog. Take it to a vet now!

Treatment needs to be done by a vet. There is no over the counter cure for heartworms. It is expensive and risky. How old is the dog and what did the test show (other than positive) Was it low, medium or strong positive?
Most vets give 1 shot, 30 days later 2 shots a day apart and then oral dose 30 days after that. Dog must be kept QUIET - no running, playing etc. After 4-6 months, the dog should be retested to be sure he is free of heartworm. He should be on a preventative also.
Good luck.

i can't believe you didn't have your dog on a preventative!! it's so much cheaper to prevent than to treat. and there is no guarentee that the dog will make it thru heartworm treatment and it's very costly and painfull for the dog. if left untreated for too long the dog will die. there is only one medication avail to the vet's only to treat heartworms presently. the medication is injected into the muscle and then kept extremely quiet. the reason for this is the heartworms as they are dieing can break off and cause a blood clot and kill the dog. and sometimes even after the first series of treatments and the dog is retested in 6mo the dog may test positve again and need to be retreated again. so one treatment may not be enough in some cases.
good luck and hope this helps

Your Vet needs to do this because they use a toxic substance to kill the heartworms and it is real hard on the dog but when the dog is done with the treatment, they can go back to normal. Also, your Vet needs to determine whether or not the dog would be able to take the treatment.

Since your dog already has heartworms you can't treat him yourself the vet will have to do thisw now. It's a series of shots he'll need to kill the heartworm . You know he'll die if not treated ? I lost a beautiful GermanShepard to heartworms didn't know he had them got him from someone else. Came home from work and he was having a cesure in the middle of the floor took him to the vet after i got oof work and thats how i found out he had it. Good LUCK to you and your dog.

Once the dog has tested positive for heartworm, I would only take my vets advice and treatment. My dogs are treated monthly with a preventative.

You have to go to the VET. They inject poison into the blood stream, which then circulates into the heart killing the worms. It is alsp an exspensive treatment. It is a very tough treatment and can very easily kill the dog. You should have had the dog on heartworm prevention to keep this problem from happening.

A vet will be the only safe recourse. This is a serious condition and has to be handled over a long course of time because the medication they give to kill the worm is a type of arsenic or rat poison If not done carefully your dog could dye.Take him to the vet and follow his instructions carefully or your pet could be in grave danger.Good Luck

This can only be treated by a vet. Treatment is risky even under the best conditions.

The medications are only available from a vet. Don't try home treatment.
