Does the body of an organ donor remain in a locker? How long can organs survive once being taken out of the body? Does becoming an organ donor mean they can take EVERYTHING out of your body if needed. Forgive me for such a dark question, but I was curious.

When my brother passed away in a motorcycle accident we had his organs donated. They do not keep your body in a locker, the organs have to basically be fresh and alive so your body is kept alive on a life support machine. Once the organs are removed, (his heart and liver) they are put on ice and flown by helicopter to a patient waiting in the surgery room for the donated organ. This is all organized very quickly so the recipient of the organ is notified and sent immediately to the hospital for transplant surgery. They can only take from a body what you or your family allow. Some people donate their whole body to medical schools and forensic studies. It was a great feeling to know that someone lived their life with the help of my brothers organs. We never found out who recieved them but it would have been nice to meet them.

If you want to research this further go to your search bar and type in Organ and Tissue Donation Programs and read the listed sites. I hope this helped answer your question - I hope other people learn from this and make a wise choice in their life. Once you are gone you might as well share what is left to benefit someone else in need.

heyFirst of all this is not a dark question. Organ donors save many lives. When happens is if a person is brain dead, which means no life, their bodies can be kept functioning with a ventalator to do the breathing for them to keep the organs oxygenated. the organs are evaluated and what can be used is used. KIdneys, hearat, eyes. lungs, livers.

There is a list of people who are waiting for a donor match. They are evaluated per the seriousness of their need for the organ, for a tissue and blood match.

Whne the organs are removed, they are instantly cooled down. And packed in ice. Each organ has a time limit of how long it can be viable. They are rushed by helechopter to the waiting recipitate. If all goes well, several people will have their lives saved becasue the kindness of a family who has chosen to be a doner.

Make sure you have a written widh with your family about if you want to be a doner or not. Also most states have a place where your intentions of being a donor are market.

I realize it is difficult for families to make this decision during a shocking time losing a family member. It is best to have these decisions before the event.

Your friend or family member who givesss to other, are giving a gitf of life which is a wan for your loved one to live on .

There is only a short window of time to harvest organs. Once the heart stops, organs r no longer being perfused with blood and oxygen so they will start to die. That is why ppl who r on the transplant list have to carry a pager. If u don't get there in time, the organ will be no good. No they don't take everything. They can use skin, corneas, heart, lungs, liver, kidneys. They cannot use the organs of ppl who have certain diseases or damage to their organs because of illness. They do not sell the organs. That is illegal. The person receiving the organ has to pay associated medical costs for the transplant, but they do not charge for the organ itself.

they use everything but i don't believe in organ donating. for one simple reason if im donating it and they harvest it for free from me why whould they sell it to the person that getting the organ. ill donate my organs only if the drs give the organs to someone for free instead of makeing profit off a donation
