If they haven't been fixed, then yes, most female dogs get their period. It's not like ours though. Their flow is very light. We actually bought doggie underware for my dog and put pantyliners in there for her.

NO! Menstruation is a primate thing. It is NOT estrus.

The female dog comes into season approximately every 6 to 8 months, though this period becomes more erratic with age and is somewhat irregular when cycles first begin. The exception to the every 6-8 month rule are African breeds (Basenji, Rhodesian Ridgeback) who cycle once a year. When female dogs get older (say, age seven or older) they do not stop cycling (there is nothing similar to menopause).

The first phase of the cycle is called “Proestrus” and is characterized by a swollen vulva, a bloody vaginal discharge, attraction of male dogs. She flirts with the male but will not allow him to mount. The bloody vaginal discharge is what seems to lead to the misconception that the dog is menstruating. In fact, the blood comes directly from the walls of the vagina rather than the sloughing of the uterine lining as occurs in menstruation.

The second phase of the cycle is called “Estrus” which is characterized by the change in character of the vaginal discharge from bloody to “straw colored.” At this time the female begins to allow the male to mount. It is classically the change from proestrus to estrus that ovulation occurs and the female is most fertile.

After the mating and the discharge is over, the period of “Diestrus” begins. The female is hormonally pregnant regardless of whether or not she is actually pregnant. During this time progesterone is produced by a structure in the ovary called a “corpus luteum.” This structure is produced by ovulation when the ova (eggs) are released. If the dog is pregnant, other hormones will take over to maintain the corpus luteum for the entire 63 days of the pregnancy. If she is not pregnant, the corpus luteum must simply wear out before she goes back into the period of hormonal inactivity in which she spends the bulk of her time. The corpus luteum wears out slowly (rather than suddenly as in pregnancy and puppybirth) over 70 days or longer. Remember, during this time her body essentially thinks she is pregnant. All the hormones are present; only the puppies are missing.

PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE have your female dogs and cats spayed and males neutered to help reduce the overpopulation of companion animals killed in shelters every year. Every litter contributes to this problem. PLEASE- I don't want to euthanize another animal, ever again.

I breed dogs for a little extra money. If a girl dog has not been spayed then they will bleed or go into heat every 6 months. I wouldn't call it a period but they do bleed regularly every 6 months so that is when people breed them. Good luck with the bet and I hope I was some help.

Yes they do but not like humans that it's monthly. It's pretty messy at first so don't panic when it happens, she will clean herself up after the first time. This is the time to get your doggy spayed/neutered (I can't never tell the difference which is the female or male), otherwise she will attract all the male dogs in your neighborhood or while you are walking her.

I think all quadruped animals get their period, well, including Gorillas. I read in an article that sanitary napkins and tampons are usually tested on them. Well, this was a long time ago.

Their 'period' is actually called a heat. they go on heat for about 3 weeks, they mate with the male dogs at about day 10 of their heat.

So who won the bet?

Female dogs start their heat cycle (period as you put it) at about six months of age(usually it may vary from dog to dog) They don't get it every month like women but, every six months is normal. It is also referred to as " Going in Season) Don't listen to the negative answers. Every one has to learn some where. Hope this helps!!!!!!!
