The first thing you need to decide on is the size. Consider that the larger the screen, the further back you need to sit from it. Just like a closeup of ones face shows pores, sitting too close to your screen will show pixels.

-- Stand back from various sized LCDs in the store to get an idea of what size will be best for you. And take note of how realistic the flesh tones look, the color contrast in particularly dark scenes, and that high motion action scenes do not corrupt the picture. This will determine how good the resolution is.

20 - 27screen needs 2.5 - 5 feet.
32 - 37screen needs 6 - 8 feet.
42 - 46screen needs 10 - 14 feet.
50+ screen needs 12 - 16 feet.

Next is brand and warranty. The better the brand > the better the quality of the light source > the longer the lifespan of the set. Look either for sets with bulbs which can be replaced or for brands with proven long-life and reliability. A replacement bulb warranty is definitely worth considering with these higher value items. Some sets have a manufacturers warranty, promising a television operating life expressed in hours.

-- And when deciding on whether or not to get the extended warranty, consider that one of the drawbacks of LCD screens is that occasionally specific pixels on the screen will cease to work, these "dead pixels" can interfere with viewing pleasure and are irreparable, so investing in an extended warranty that offers set replacement in the case of dead pixels might be worth it for you.

Then there's contrast ratio, which is the difference between the brightest white and the deepest black. The higher the ratio, the better.

Next, consider the viewing angle, which is how far from the side you can view the screen without affecting the color or brightness. A lot of manufacturers will claim to give you a 180-degree viewing angle, but LCDs tend to lose contrast and brightness as you move away from center.

Check for HD compliance and integrated tuner. HDMI provides true high-definition audio and video in one cable. It is the best choice, so make sure that your TV has HDMI out. Most come with the integrated tuner, it's very much worth the extra cost.

You also may want to consider energy consumption. Especially if you're purchasing a larger sized screen, you may want to look for an EnergyStar product.

there are very few LCD TVs with inbuilt hd tuner. make sure the one you buy has a hdmi socket so you are able to connect it to a hd source. in built freeview is also worth having.
