It is a perfect picture of Russian politics. First, the itchy bug is removed and the murderer had ample time to make his escape, secondly this deed set an example to those who have some criticism in mind against gospodin Putin. This tells his agents that turning is not a good idea, and that Russia prefers to to its laundry (Politkovskaya) internally. On the other hand, assassination of the president is an old habit in the U.S, so we better not be too steep in judgment.

Not showing off the Russians were showing what happens to people who oppose them. Assasination is a common place in Russian politics. The Afghanistan invasion started off with Russian soldiers dressed as Afghans killing the Afghan leader and all of his family. Children and all. They are very good at not leaving witnesses the pointing at everyone else and saying. "We are innocent, its the rest of the world trying to make us look bad!" Remember these are the same people who machine gunned their own troops if they tried to retreat and assasinated their leaders if they didn't get good results in WWII. Look at Chechnya. Nope not showing off just being Russians. Taking care of business. They are still assasinating children in Afghanistan with the mines they left behind for them.

Oh, my gosh. How evil is that? There truly are evil people in this world. If you don't do what they want or you do something they don't agree with, you're dead. I don't know if you'd call it showing off, I'd call it pure evil.
