I do not know the "proper" way.
We found a hammer and a nail worked.
We put two holes in the shell in the "eyes" and pured out the milk then we took the hammer and cracked the shell to get the meat.
No too dainty but it did work.
We did not have a machette which they told us was necessary to cut open the shell.

Hold coconut over a bowl in one hand such that the "midriff" rests in the middle of your palm, with the tip on one end and the eyes on the other.
Whack the coconut with the back (that is to say the blunt side) of the cleaver a few times all around the center until it cracks open cleanly into two nearly equal halves. Make sure you use the blunt side of the cleaver.
Catch the juice in the bowl as it drains from the cracks.

you need a machete or a long knife (the type for cutting branches) . if the knife is sharp, it would be easy. there are basically 2 ways, first take the knife and start striking it at the top or bottom of the husk and slowly cut the husk away or sometimes as you strike at the cconut your knife gets stuck in between the husk... its ok just lift the knife with the husk still attach and hammer it on the floor...not too hard other wise the shell inside would break... once the knife is somewat tight in the husk...you can twist the knife and the husk be come loose ... you can ctually peel it... but this takes a lot of strength... the better way is to shapened your machete and just cut off the husk... we can acomplished in about 5 - 10 minutes.. then take out the shell and using your machete...carve a hole at the top ... usually when we open a coconut ... we dun need to really peel off the husk... you just need to be able to slice the top and carve a hole in it.

The easiest and safest way is to poke a couple of its eyes out and drain the juice, then stick it in the oven on 350 degrees for 5-10 minutes the shell will crack into pieces. Let it cool a while and it's easy. It will crack long before the coconut meat gets hot enough to cook.

Some people say to get into the "eye" at the top, others say hit the whole coconut with a hammer. Good luck.

first remove all extra fibers from coconut shell. then mark a line with damp spoon along the center of the shell. Hammer the shell against stone counter at one point till u hear a crack sound. Now drain the water into a cup. then proceed hammering along the marked line til breaks into 2 halves.

My husband puts it in the oven on 350 I think for a half hour or so. Take it out (careful, hot!) wrap in tea towel or towel and give it a good whollop with a hammer. This is of course, if you're not so interested in saving the liquid inside. We haven't done this in a while, so the temperature and time might be off a bit. Good luck!

in boracay you get a big, sharp, and strong knife called a bolo and find a place where you can cut it and it wont leave a mark such as a tree stump or something like that then you just slice it open. it always works, i've done it a million times...

my mother took a hatchet type knife in the kitchen and tapped it slightly with a hammer it cracked perfectly in 1/2. its best to do in the sink cause it can get messy.
good luck,

Take it outside, set it on concrete and hit it with a hammer.
Sometimes just throwing it down on the concrete will work, too.
