many dogs learn by hand signals not verbal ; I find myself giving hand signals without realizing that I am doing it; you have a different challenge but since your dog can see and smell, there are a lot of positives; perhaps this site can help you; with anything if there is a will , there is a way; love your puppy and train him and everyone will be happy hearing or not . Good luck. http://www.deafdogs.org/training/

I have a 2 year old dog who is deaf. He was about 2 months when we discovered he definately couldnt hear. I did tons of research on the internet and started teaching him hand signals. With him being an outside dog, we had to teach him road knowledge as well. At the time, we had 2 other dogs that he could learn from. That was a huge help to us as far as training him to go to his pen...now we just do the signal for it and he goes.
Basically, you have to have tons of patience and just figure out what works with your situation. I also got some help from different people on a deaf dog website.

Try these...

Be patient and good luck!

How do you know it cant hear? And if it indeed cannot hear, you will have to be very careful about protecting it it's whole life. It's like a kid who's deaf. My dalmation was deaf in one ear since she was a puppy and she lived a long life. So good luck and take care of that puppy.

I rescued a stray puppy that was deaf and he was so smart it was hard to tell at first that he could not hear. He was totally deaf and a foster puppy that I needed to find a home for. I found him one with a woman who took him to a trainer that taught him commands by sign. He's a great dog and a happy and spoiled one today. Here's a great site for training tips for deaf dogs:

Have the dog fixed as soon as possible. You don't want to take any chance of it passing the defect along. If you are unable to or do not want to provide the dog with its special needs go on line and find www.arescuemom.org They help people find placement for animals like yours. If you want to keep the dog go to you local library and do research.

We have friends who have a deaf Jack Russell... he sleeps as late as he wants because he can't hear the alarm!! They got another Jack Russell and the deaf one watches the other one.... they get his attention by waving at him.... he watches them intently. He's four years old now and enjoying a great life.

It's your call... I say let him live and love him all the more.

Be blessed!

Train it to hand signals. To get your puppies attention you can tap on the floor and give it a treat when it comes. They can feel the vibration on the floor.
