I've already extended my currrent L1B visa to the 5 yr max and am thinking about changing jobs but do not have an offer yet.
I was considering switching to H1B but it seems the next opportunity is applying in April and effective Oct 07 which would be after my current Visa expires, and it also would not give me many years because my L1 years are counted in.
I have heard of a possibility to remain in US through applying for a Green Card but I'm not sure whether I would need to already have an H1B for this special extension.

You're ok for now. Don't put yourself through all this hassle. Stay with the L1B until you switch jobs, then go from there. Don't mess up your chance to stay in USA when you don't have to. Stay with your current job right now, and wait for the opportune moment, to change, when you know it's safe. Patience. Good Luck
