ahh, the famous engineering project.

the thing that will cause the egg to break is the impact right?

thus, you must find a way to absorb all that energy.

how about embedding the egg in a large block of epoxy (could use glass bubbles to make it lighter - google 3M K1 microspheres - but that might distort the transparency of the epoxy)? don't know if that would work, but it would look pretty awesome even if the shell cracked!

take a picture and/or video if you try that and send it to me! :D

if you make a good parachute that would help.

also maybe try making a rubber band ball around the egg (will the rubber bands compress the shell and make it crack before you even drop it? not sure, but would be cool to try), though that's probably not the best way to use rubber bands here...

another thing to keep in mind is that F = ma. a is your acceleration which isn't really changing (gravity is constant here). m is the other factor and is your mass. thus, the lighter whatever you are dropping is, the less force there will be on impact.

dropping a sphere ensures that there is the same amount of material protecting the egg regardless of how it lands on the ground.

maybe try to suspend the egg in the middle of a spherical ball with rubberbands. the rubber will dampen and the spherical structure around it could act as a crush zone (like how they always design the front of cars to crush in a crash to prevent driver injury) that absorbs the energy of the impact and protects the egg.

michael s is referring to what i used to call "flubber" as a kid. maybe google that and find a recipe. that stuff is fun to make for the heck of it so certainly worth a try! make a huge batch! :D

You could make a little parachute contrapton, try making two little "skis" out of foam, or even Twinkies! Attatch them to a little styrofoam cutout from an egg carton, just one. Next, attatch a little parachute to the egg carton, the ones you get out of those cheap-o toy soldiers may not be effective enough though. You may want either a bigger one, or to make one yourself. I hope I helped! If all else fails, have someone at the bottom with a baseball glove, and can catch the eggs really accurately :P. Just kididng.

put it in a box full of bubble wrap. Be sure to tape the wrap securely around the egg. When my child was in 3rd grade she did it. The egg was dropped from the top of a cherry picker and it didn't break.

there are many ways
parachute.
a cube holding it inside a bigger cube supported with rubber bands.
You want to get out cheap inside a balloon inside a balloon in side a ballon. put three balloons inside each other put the egg in them. blow the most inside one up a bit and seal. the middle one a bit more and than the third one blow up all the way
Of course make sure you can fit a egg inside the neck of the balloons and use as many ballons as you can

Put it in a box firmly packed with styrofoam peanuts, surrounded by newspaper. Tape it up really well with duct tape, and put a plastic bag (trash bag) sized parachute.

Worked for my 5th grade project ;)

we used a material made from poly vinyl alcohol (white glue) and boric acid to make a gloppy gell that protected the egg very well when we used a parachute to slow it down. we won! have fun!

the easiest, cheapest way is to wrap it in bubble wrap.

like the MARS lander that was dropped on to mars.

distribute the forces
