The long term belief is that Moses wrote the first 5 books of the bible but this is contrary to modern thinking for several reasons. First, in Deuteronomy it talks about Moses death....so Moses wrote about events after his own death? Next, there are 2 accounts of the flood and 2 different accounts of genesis which leads one to believe they were written by different hands. Also, the archealogical evidence does not support many of the contentions in the first 5 books (the City of David was a huge walled city, Exodus, Jerusalem the hub of the area..the archaelogical evidence supports none of these)The most knowledgeable account I can find currently thinks that the first 5 books of the bible were actually from 4 seperate literary sources (all unknown authors). These 4 versions were woven into becoming Genesis, Exodus, Leviticus, Numbers, and Deuteronomy.

Author: The Book of Genesis does not specifically name its author. Traditionally, the author has always assumed to have been Moses. There is no conclusive reason to deny the Mosaic authorship of Genesis.
Date of Writing: The Book of Genesis does not state when it was written. The date of authorship is likely between 1440 and 1400 B.C. after Moses led the Israelites out of Egypt.
Purpose of Writing: The Book of Genesis has sometimes been called the "seed-plot" of the entire Bible. Most of the major doctrines in the Bible are introduced in "seed" form in the Book of Genesis. Along with the fall of man, God's promise of salvation or redemption is recorded (Genesis 3:15). The doctrines of creation, imputation of sin, justification, atonement, depravity, wrath, grace, sovereignty, responsibility, and many more are all addressed in this "seed" Book called Genesis.

,
Hey "Answer Man", you say you know where it is found.
Have a look at it. You will find it is "Genesis". It is a Book with many chapters in it.
And, yes, it is the first book of the Pentateuch. Traditionally, Moses wrote those five books under inspiration of God. No good reason for thinking otherwise.

The age-old Hebrew and Christian tradition is that Moses, giuded of G-d, composed Genesis out of ancient documents existent in his day. The book closes something like 300 years before Moses. Moses could have gotten this information only by direct revelation from God, or through such historical records as had been handed down from his forefathers.

You've heard a lot of people say, with or without creedence, that Moses is traditionally thought of as the author of Genesis. There is abundant internal evidence that it was actually written AFTER the Babylonian Exile, and no evidence that it existed before then. My best guess for the REAL author is EZRA.
