You can try to disable start up items by going to run, msconfig and then to the start up tab. DONOT DISABLE ANYTHING IF YOU'RE NOT 100% SURE OF WHAT IT IS!

Norton Antivirus slows down your pc anyway. But shutting down some programs might help you. At first right click on your taskbar and select "Task Manager". Go to the secont tab to see background programs. If "MDM.EXE" is running, end the task. Else, close any program you dont need. You can stop your anti-virus while you are not connected to the Internet. It helps you too. Also defrag your hard disk, however it takes a long time.

Control - Alt - Delete will open a list of running programs and processes. BTW - When you say you have adware, do you mean Adaware? Adware is not a good thing, but malicious and annoying software. But to improve your system:
Take Norton out NOW!
1) Its known to use cloaking technology that spyware and other manufacturers can use to cloak their malicious software from you... AND Norton.
2) It is VERY memory intensive.
3) It's not free.
Try either of these FREE antivirus applications. AVG or Avast!

I'm an expert, and I was gonna type out the answers, but the first four answerers already did that. So I won't bother. The only other option I can think of is to check your size, to see if your system can handle your needs. You need 1gig for storage, memory, and at least an 80gig hard drive. Good luck

You can have a guess of the background programs running using the Taskmanger. Also you can use msconfig to remove unwanted programs running during startup.

Ctrl-alt-delete all at the same time will bring up task manager.
You can see what programs are running if you click the tab that says processes.
