However my father is an asthamatic and is allergic to dogs which shed hair so Im looking at breeds with minimum maintenance and who do not mind spending time alone in the yard or the kennel (as the yard is fenced there will be no need to chain the dog.)A loyal breed which is good with elderly people at the same time intimidating to strangers. Ive heard of a local breed called the "rajapalayam" which is supposed to be good if trained well (however this a sight hound ), am also considering the following breeds , german shepherd , boxer , great dane and the labrador , pls tell me what breed you think would be the best to look after my Dads house and still be a good enough companion for small walks around the country side. We have owned dogs before but they were mixed breed , this is the first time we are looking at pure breds , the average temp. where i stay (Kerala) is around 35 deg. C (HOT) and its quite humid and sweaty , also we have rain showers approximately 6 months of the year.

I personally am allergic to dogs to and my Black Lab is a great companion she is very loyal and smart. Labs learn quickly and are a very loyal and protective breed. I would recommend that you get one that is a t least 11/2 -2 years old that way that I just wanna play puppy stage is over. Labs love walking and the country air and being outside in a pen where it could play and smell the fresh air would make it very happy. I know that my lab learned to sit. stay, shake, stay with me, help me walk , and to bring me the phone in a matter of about 4 months. Labs also are very good about sensing danger.

The german shepherd is a good dog I luv them because of their wolf like looks and protective nature they r close to wolves :) they do shed though all yr long though lol but regular brushing solves the problem if youve heard bad things about them forget them lol they can live anywhere even apts are easy easy easy to train and will b your best friend they r also excellent guard dogs they are very protective of their "pack members". Socialize them with other dogs and people and theyll b perfectly fine they r an all around good family dog really good with kids especially young ones I must admit they nip a bit as pups but with a stern hand the problem disappears plus its good u luv excersize because so does this dog lol they need excersize and will luv jogging with u or next to u while u ride your bike or skateboard or watever lol I hope u find the perfect dog for u :D God bless!!!

Boxers are great guard dogs. My grandpa had some. The problem with shorthair breeds is that if you leave them outside they will pick up pollen and dander so your father might want to keep him in the house. GSD's shed a lot especially if left outside. Great Danes are the lazy boxers. Boxers are very friendly but leaving any dog outside can cause bonding problems between dog and master. Some breeds may even howl (i know GSD's and some boxers do it a lot) if lonely and will not be quiet

If your father wants a guard dog and he is allergic to dogs I would suggest a prescription allergy tablet that he takes each day. I have asthma and cat allergies, but I have 11 dogs and 2 cats as well as a ton of livestock and small animals and I am just fine.

Dogs should be kept in the home, not in a kennel. Outdoor dogs can be stolen, injured by pranksters, they get very lonely and will bark and annoy neighbors. They want to be with their people.

I recommend the bull mastiff. They are very large dogs but they are very loyal. They make excellent guard dogs and it is actually recommended that they spend time alone and only with the owners because they are so protective of them. You should get one as a pup and raise them, don't get an adult because they already have their pick of whom they want to protect.I would get a female-they are more protective than males. The draw backs of having a bull mastiff is they do get extremely large and eat a tremendous amount of food.

have you thought about a kuvasz? they are excellent dogs, for both guarding (house and people) and being lovely to their owners. their only problem is that they think their territory goes as far as the eyes can see, so if the fence is not high enough you may have to keep them chained.

First off, any dog that loves and is bonded to you will protect you.Dogs are pack animals so hence they need to be in a pack.Tell him to get two dogs so they have company.Shelter, food and water is also neccasary.
