My dog got lost last week and (after a great deal of stress and tears) I picked him up from the City Dogs Home the next day. Then last night I had to take him to the vet because he'd been coughing, was listless, off his food and had a snotty nose. She gave me some antibiotics for him and said he'd picked up "kennel cough" during his overnight stay at the Home. I know he'll be okay (still poorly today) but I would like to know more about it.

And everyone wish my Scrappy a speedy recovery!

BigMama points to Wikipedia, which is always a good resource. However, I think that this page covers more. Definitely take a look if Wikipedia doesn't answer all your questions...

http://www.vetinfo.com/dkcough.html

What I like about the resource above is that it is in question and answer format. There is a ton of great information and the tone is very personal.

Good luck, Scrappy!

Oh poor Scrappy baby, hope hes feeling much better, our golden retriever got kennel cough a good few years ago at a kennel were the owner thought it a good idea to take stray dogs in, bless her for been kind but the dog had kennel cough and wiped the whole kennel out with it, our dog was very listless for a day or so but she picked up once the antibiotics started to work, we also gave her half a teaspoon of baby Benylin every day on the vets recommendation, within 3 days she was more or less her normal self again, Scrappy will be fine and I hope he has learnt his lesson and sticks by his moms side in future when he goes out, give him a big hug from me and hope hes well very soon.

Kennel cough is naughty and very infectious. All good kennels insist pets going in are vaccinated against it. It may be poor Scrappy picked it up en route before getting to the Dogs Home. It sounds as though the poor things have whooping cough but with plenty of liquid and antibiotics there is usually a quick recovery and no ill effects. Hope Scrappy is glad to be home and being cared for. Quick recovery laddie.

It's basically a doggy cold. They feel crappy, just like we do and generally I wouldn't suggest using antibiotics because they're not necessary...you wouldn't take antibiotics every time you got the sniffles either. It just overall sucks because it's hard to watch your dog lay there feeling all crappy. You can give a bit of robitussen dm (no more than a mil at a time) to help with the symptoms and help the poor baby breathe a little better and sleep it off...but there's not much more you can do beyond making sure he stays hydrated and fed...and perhaps setting up a vaporizer near the dog bed and wiping his nose for him. Good luck Scrappy, I know it sucks now, but you'll be all better soon!

Go to www.marvistavet.com
/html/body_kennel_cough.html
This site will help you to understand exactly what kennel cough is and should put your mind at rest.

Now youv'e got him back I guess you'll just have to use this illness as an excuse to give him lots of cuddles.
