#1 - For those saying a budgie isn't a parrot...you're wrong.
#2 - Budgies CAN talk.

As far as I'm concerned, the best way to help a budgie find it's voice is to use the same commands consistently. For instance, when you ask your bird to step up for you, always use the command "Step Up" or "Up". When you put him down, use the command "Down".

When you greet your fid, always use the same greeting. "Hi baby!" or "Hello!"

When you give him dinner use the same phrase "Mmmmm!" or "Yummy!" or something that he can relate to dinner.

Those are the words he or she will pick up faster than any other phrases, because you consistently have an opportunity to use them every day, several times a day.

You will need to listen closely to your bird's speech though. With budgies, their vocal chords aren't as accomodating for speech as say an African Grey or a Macaw. It will sound garbled, and it may or may not be clear. My old cockatiel used to call our Boxer, Apollo, Dapodo. That's what came out when he tried to say it...but it's still speech, and it's still productive.

And, don't be upset if your bird won't talk for you but will for everyone else. A lot of birds talk to themselves for amusement. If your his favorite person, you are his amusement, and therefore he doesn't have to entertain himself in your presence...I'm not saying it's the rule, but it happens.

Firstly for a budgie to talk it must be a young male, for some reason females budgies cannot imitate sound.

The only way that you can get a budgie to talk is by repetitive action, every time you enter near your budgie say the same thing every time you leave from your budgie say the same thing. When you play with him repeat the same sentences.

Place a mirror in the cage which is easy for your bird to access, if you see your budgie at the mirror after you have been working with him on talking, and he is making strange noises chance are he is trying and getting nearer to talking.

I found this good website and apart from the clipping a budgies wings I feel it is a very good informational site for what you want to know

I have a budgie and he talks and by talks I mean can say his name and its very clear. I just repeated certain words over and over. Also I always thought that if your budgie had a grey patch above its beak where its nostrils are its a female and if its a blue patch its male. Also My grandad has kept budgies since his mid 20s and he is now in his 80s he always said that they cant really start to talk until they reach a year which is bang on with my budgie as he is just over a year old. Also I would like to add that budgies are part of the parrot family.

Teaching Your Budgie To Talk
· Young birds are more likely to learn to talk

· It is better if only one person teaches the budgie to talk as he may get confused if he hears more than one voice or accent

· Give your budgie at least one twenty-minute training session each day, mornings are a good time as the bird will be alert

· Start with a simple HELLO followed by his name, repeat this as often as possible until your bird has mastered this phrase then try to teach him another phrase and so on

· Many budgies have the ability to use context when they speak, you can teach them this by talking to them and telling them what you or other people are doing. When talking to them use names whenever you can, i.e. Kate is typing on the computer or Julia is going to sleep now

· Encourage your bird when it talks, listen very carefully when its speaks and let it know when you understand it. Even if you do not understand, tell it that it is talking nice and talk to other members of the family about what it is saying

· It's a good idea to teach your bird its address and telephone number, if he ever gets out he will be able to tell people where he belongs

Like Scotty said males do talk more. Females talk very rarely. But if you want them to talk get atleast 2 budgies, do not get 3, 2 females 1 male, they fight to the death the 2 females because they want the guy. So anyway ima keep it simple. Males talk more and females talk rarely. My male always sings to my female budgie. Mostly love songs because they have already mated and he also sings to pleasure her in some way I don't know. Most of the time he sings they are sitting right next to each other.

When you try to get a budgie to talk you must use 1 or 2 syllable words so they are easy to repeat like good boy or good girl until they are able to put things together.
The time that they take the most notice of you is when you cover them over as they do not spend there time looking all around them but concentrate on noise and it will be your voice that they will hear and you will have to have patience and keep repeating the same thing to them each day.
Eventually they get used to it and learn other words but don`t forget to use the words that they have already learned.
Have patience as when they do talk it is great, GOOD LUCK.

Several of my budgies talk, but I don't know if they're male or female so I can't address that.
I raised them from the egg and talked to them all the time. They don't talk like parrots, more like froggy from the little rascals tv series. At first it was hard to understand, but once I got used to it, I could. I've been teaching them new things. They stare at my mouth and listen. It's usually several days before I hear them repeat it.
I've had budgies in that past that also talked. I kept them around my parrots, so they must have picked it up.
Try repeating a phrase over and over day after day and just listen. Tell us if it works.

Firstly if anyone ever tells you that having two budgies together will stop the male from talking its a load of rubbish. Also its not just the males that talk, females can pick it up too.

When i got my first budgie i kept repeating the same line over n over again to him. Everytime you go to your budgie say the same thing. My first line he picked up was "Sinbads a good boy". I regulary everday as often as i could would talk to him and always bring up "sinbads a good boy". Suddenly out of the blue one morning he was sitting on my shoulder and he said it as clear as i had been. Then i moved onto another line, "give me a kiss" and after about 2 weeks he'd picked it up.

Its all a matter of how much patience and time you have. When i went to the pet shop to get him a girlfriend to start breeding (also brought 2 extra boys n girls) the pet shop told me he would proberly stop talking. If anything he was the opposite!!! In the end i had bred 21 Budgies and they all lived in a large avery in my concervatory, which had a larger avery outside joined to it. They could go in n out as they pleased during the day. My mum was the first to notice that one of the females was talking. And b4 we realised it, out of all 21 budgies 9 of them talked. 6 Males and 3 females and it was as if Sinbad had taught them.

So trust me just stick at it

I don't know HOW to get a budgie to talk, but I saw this and I wanted to say to all the people saying that they don't talk: YES they DO.....I don't remember it, but when I was little, my dad had a bugie that would do little tricks for him and would talk. The budgie was male and my dad worked with him a lot but I am told that he would say "Here kitty kitty" and my mom had a chronic cough and the budgie would copy her and he would Cough too...he said other things, but as I don't remember I couldn't tell you without askin my mom or dad. Wish I could that would be so cute to see. Good Luck and be patient and work work work with him.

Yes a budgie is able to talk. My budgie could say his name, ask for dinner and all sorts. All you have to do is sit in a quiet room and repeat short words very often and then you can teach them alsorts. good luck :-) by the way dont give it a mirror or it will talk to itself thinking its another budgie then it wont want to know.
